I might as well answer since I know, won't keep my knowledge away from a fellow Dragonell lover!
Both work pretty well, air dry clay is very easy to sand if you're doing that sort thing with your horns.
Model magic cracks if you use too much so use moderately when you're covering your tin-foil.
Personally, I use model magic because it's lightweight and doesn't leave a powder or a mess.

I made a paste out of water and some of the clay, and filled in the cracks with it, over and over, and then sanded it to make it smooth : ) no cracks for me .

How do you attach them to the headband and did you ever sand paper it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Eldritch-Fox In reply to OrangeSugarr [2012-08-30 22:26:37 +0000 UTC]
I sand papered them, yes, and very gently.
I answered that question about the head band earlier. It involes screws and stuff. And possibly wood glue, because hot glue can warp and melt the airdry clay.

Alright I have a few questions.
-Do you paint them after they dry completely or do you paint it right after you finish forming them?
-How long do they usually take to dry once you paint them?
-Is using a hot glue gun alright to use to glue to the head band? or do you something else that is recommended to use when attaching them to the headband?
Sorry If these questions were already asked. orz

Eldritch-Fox In reply to Ore-sama-da-ze [2012-08-30 22:28:01 +0000 UTC]
I paint them after they're COMPLETELY DRY.
Oh gosh, I waited 7 days for a complete dry.
I didn't use hot glue at all. They melt the airdry clay.

I meant to ask, I'm making my horns right now, but like when I lay them down it goes flat on the back. Is this a problem you faced? My Karkat ones are being sit up straight, but the gamzee ones would fall over and go out of shape. Any help on this?

arent they heavy , just using model magic by crayola? me and my friend made a pair, and they turned out to be really heavy as fuck :u we ended up having to throw them away, cause they broke with all the cracking.

Eldritch-Fox In reply to Hooded-Chick [2012-01-16 01:39:01 +0000 UTC]
Mine were not heavy, I don't know how to fix that, but try not to make them too big or too thick. I said to another about the cracks
"Well, you can take some of the model magic clay and mix it with water till it becomes pasty, them smear it over the cracks until they fill, and let them dry like this. Mine have a few cracks, it's normal because the clay expands when it dries.
But keep layering the pasty liquid model magic and letting it dry and dry not to touch them for 7 days after making them."
and be sure to sand them gently afterwards for asmoothness

I also meant to ask, did you make tin foil shapes first then just go around it with thin sheets of model magic? Or is it all just soild model magic?

Eldritch-Fox In reply to Woulphie [2012-01-12 02:11:11 +0000 UTC]
it's solid model magic
no tin foil at all
