I always thought it had to do with the back - back in the 80's you saw mohawks with ponytails at the back, I figured that was one kind.

but then! I googled it a little then and wiki says "The Mohawk hairstyle known as a "Mohican hairstyle" in British English" on the page where it says "Mohican may refer to:" but unfortunately there's no more information than that on the link and I've lost my enthusiasm

All I know is the book/film 'The last of the Mohicans' - which would imply that the people of the tribe were indeed called Mohicans.
