Description Last week was the Coast Guard Fest in Grand Haven Michigan. It's a big festival to honor the U.S. Coast Guard with a carnival, parades, tents selling all kinds of tourist stuff, tours of ships and at the end, a big fireworks display. There was a ton of people there and I had a lot of fun.

This is a picture of the fireworks. They shoot them off in front of this hill across of the Grand River and every year a few fires pop up from the fireworks landing on the hill. But this year the fire was really big and out of hand. A good 60% of the hill was on fire and they had all kinds of fire fighting boats and trucks trying to put it out. Lots of fun.

I love how the traffic light is cutting up the fireworks... with so many pictures of fireworks, it's tough to find a way to break it apart into something interesting.

Including the people helped too; how much did you have to read up on fireworks exposure (if at all) before doing this? I had to read an article before I could take pictures of fireworks or lightning.

Thanks for the comments

As for research, I've never done any specific research about night/fireworks/lightning photography. I experimented around to find a good exposure for this, and as you can see from the EXIF data, it was an 8th of a second, and that seemed to be right to get all the foreground elements.

Mostly I just shot a lot and found some good settings to get the exposure right

Good to know; maybe I gave that article too much credit.
I think it said to use a particular shutter speed; if you go too fast, you just get tiny flecks of light and you don't capture the "streak" effect or glow of fireworks... but, if you take too long, it'll be all blurry, of course.

Yeah, it's all just a game of playing with the exposure till you find a good mix that works and gives you what you want.

haha! I was there, too... they didn't even get the fires out until 1:30PM the next day- that's the way I heard it, at least.
