Description The full title is, "Though She Wanted To Keep Him, He Had To Go Back". Again, DA's title restrictions are fer the birds.

A print of this paining is available at my etsy shop, here: [link]

This was another very unprofessional distraction from the commissions I'm supposed to be working on instead. I find more and more I'm enjoying painting fish, but after this one I think I'll return to the land for a little while. The story to go along with the painting is one the viewer will have to invent on their own.

Prints and such can be found at my print shop, thus: [link]

Painted on canvas with acrylics, while listening to pirate songs and Alison Krauss: "You Will Be My Ain True Love".

Certainly! Unless someone offers me a truckload of cash for it...

Beautiful, simply beautiful. I absolutely love the colors you used for the mermaid. She's kind of a blue-green or turquoise and the fact that she doesn't look like all the other mermaids I've seen makes me love it even more

Thank you! I'm so happy to hear you say that. I wanted to come up with something interesting and different, and I'm glad it worked out.

It looks so sad, and yet so innocent at the same time. I love that she's blue. It fits perfectly.

It is a little sad, but of course, the story can go any way the reader likes. Me, I'm a huge fan of happy endings.

Interestingly, I have a painting I made a year ago which involves a darker yet equally sad conclusion to this narrative. I'm guessing we were both inspired by Hans Christian Anderson's story.

I just added the painting to my gallery here.

I like your painting very much! It's excellent and a very unusual style.

To be perfectly honest, I always hated the Hans Christian Anderson story. It seemed unnecessarily dark and violent and depressing -- while I enjoy the macabre as much as anyone, I am a shallow creature and prefer happy endings to the kind where the heroine has to choose between dying and cutting out her lover's tongue.

As to my own painting, it's open to interpretation. One version I like is that she rescued him from drowning and is bummed out that he can't stay and play.

This is really really lovely and you really captured the expression on the mermaid(?)'s face. Her design is also really really lovely too. I like the fish, and that they don't take away from the focus of the original picture all too much.

His anatomy seems a teeny bit funny, but I'm also not taking into account that he's slumping over slightly XD;

Anywho, faved, lovely work

elephantblue In reply to Il-Luna [2008-10-02 01:16:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I see what you mean about his anatomy, but I had it look that was because of how his body would be drifting if he were in water, and how one leg is being pulled by the tentacles. I probably could have done that better.

I'm glad you like it!

Il-Luna In reply to elephantblue [2008-10-02 01:18:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I was thinking about that too, it makes the body look floaty-like so it's stylistic instead of off O:

Yep C: This was done with paints?
