Description Itachi stepped ahead to open the door for her. The room was virtually bare. It had a small wooden bed frame with a thin, grayish mattress with several stains. There was a blanket folded at the foot of the bed and a pillow on top. A small table sat at the left and a dresser sat in the far corner. It was horribly scratched and in need desperate of refinishing. A bare bulb hung above them. Dull, yellow light filled the box-like room as Itachi flicked the switch towards the ceiling. “I’m sorry this is all we have. It belonged to one of our former members.”
The girl said nothing and slowly lowered herself to the bed, her arms wrapped protectively around her chest. Without  moving Itachi asked, “What’s your name?” His tone was surprisingly kind. She made no move to respond. “Can I get you anything? Food? Drink?” After several moments of silence, he exited the room, closing the door behind him.
He made his way towards the kitchen and stopped in front of the refrigerator. It was a faded beige and had scratches and rust spots all over it. The only thing on the front was a piece of paper labeled ‘Shopping List’ in neat handwriting; probably Konan’s. It was pinned up with a shuriken magnet. Itachi grasped the handle and pulled pack. There wasn’t much left in the fridge. He sighed and pulled out some of his dango. She’d better be thankful I’m even offering her this, he thought unhappily. In most cases, touching Itachi’s dango meant certain death. Even if you had bought it; if Itachi lay claim to it, no one dared touch it.
With the dango on the counter, he pulled a glass out of the cupboard and filled it with tap water. Itachi also grabbed an extra blanket and pillow from the living area. With to objects bundled in his arms he turned back towards the girl’s room. He’d be satisfied just to see her take a drink of water. He wanted to know that she had some will to live. He wondered silently what it was that made him feel so strongly for the girl. All he knew was that it was something more than pity.
Once at the door, he moved his load, so that he had a free arm. When no reply came after his knock, Itachi turned the handle and swung the door open. “I brought you some things.” She had her back to him, facing the wall. “Do you like dango?” He heard a soft mumble. He stepped closer and set the food and water on the side table. She slowly turned to face him, suddenly aware of her intense hunger and thirst. The girl quickly reached out and snatched the water, gulping it down like it would be taken away from her any second. Once she set the glass down, Itachi pushed the dango towards her. He set the blanket and pillow at the foot of the bed and picked up the glass, wordlessly exiting the room.
He ran the glass under the faucet again, letting it refill. Itachi had been shocked at how quickly she’d downed eight ounces of water. He returned with the water and watched in amazement as she gulped it as quickly as the first. The dango had already been eaten, so he picked up the container and set it aside. Itachi took a seat beside her on the bed, remaining a comfortable distance away. “What is your name?”
She glanced down at her lap, not wanting to say anything. Itachi reached out, tipping her chin up, an expression of concern on his face. The girl cringed at the touch, pulling back. “M-Momo,” she stammered. The pressure was too much for her and she began breaking down again, bringing her knees up to her chest.
“Please, Momo. Talk to me.” She shook her head. Tears streamed down her face, and she let out a choking sob. Itachi hurt for the girl and wanted to keep her from becoming even more upset, so he left the room.
