Your ending brought a single tear to my eye through its sheer EPIC.

But seriously, the FUDGE was up with that ending?

I'm glad I made you shed a tear 8'D /slapped

I'm not entirely sure which ending you're referring to, but if it's to the true ending, then I agree very much 8'D

That's one thing which kinda annoys me - Why bother making multiple endings if none of them are good ones?
In my general opinion, a game should, I dunno, REWARD you maybe a little for completeing it?
At least when getting 100% completion.

But no, this game's reward instead is finding out that the father survived and continued doing horrific things to people.
Woo.

That said, it was a totally awesome game up to that point. Certainly a lot better than Witch's House.

Well, I don't think the 100% completion ending was meant to be a reward. It was more of a sequel hook, which somehow failed because apparently Sen doesn't want to make horror games anymore;;

I thought The Witch's House was great though, especially how it handled the Player Punch at the end. The end wasn't meant to be a Happy ending, it was meant to tell you a story. The Witch's House owes most of its popularity for the huge plot twist at the end, it was a good decision in my humble opinion ^^

But it even hinted in-game that 100% completion would give you... Something. It just seems a bit cheap to use it for advertising. I read somewhere that it ties the game into beign something of a prequel to another game the guy made previously, but having not played that game, it just seems like wasted effort.

Still, that said, it's a shame he isn't creating more video games - Despite its failing at the end, Mad Father was a genuinely enjoyable game, and I loved it to bits.

Okay, I'll give you that, the plot twist was really good, and brilliantly executed to perfection.

Unfortunately, I found the entirity of the game beforehand to be... Well, bland. I mean, yes, it had a creepy atmosphere, but death came so suddenly that you never had the chance to really develop any feeling of dread. It was pretty much like playing a platformer, dying just kind of made no impact.
As such, even so epic a plot twist as the one in Witch's House just fell flat with the lack of substance in the rest of the game.

Also, I personally felt like they just threw in a plot twist at the end to make the rest of the game interesting, and to me that felt a little cheap, even if it was a well-handled twist. And yeah, the game had a 'Happy' ending too, but that one was so simple and bland that it was obviously added for the sole purpose of creating the illusion of choice.

To me, I felt like the Witch's House would have worked much better as a book, or some sort of movie. And that also ties into my annoyance with things that pretend to have multiple endings, when really there's no right answer, you're just choosing your poison. Horror games can't work the same horror in other media, because if they just have completely depressing endings, why should a player bother playing, if the character is doomed either way? The pull of multiple endings comes from the freedom of making a choice.

Oops, rambled a lot there.
Sorry, I'm into video game design, so I tend to talk too much about them.

It is? I don't believe it was hinting at a good ending. It just hinted at something for you after 100% completion.
I've played Misao, it's not really related in a sense because you don't have to know about it to understand neither Mad Father nor the 100% completion bonus. Ogre's motivations are still an enigma even if you've played Misao. I felt that Misao was actually quite a bit scarier as compared to Mad Father(I went into the game thinking that it'd be about the same level of scare tactics, but I was wrong--). Maybe it's because you don't have another character acting as your companion(like in Ib, you had Garry. As for Mad Father, I latched onto Coron even after she died, as pathetic as it may sound l'D ).

It is quite a shame, but I don't think it's the last we've seen of Sen. He's mentioned that he isn't going to create /horror/ games, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll stop creating games altogether. I think he just wants to branch out into other genres. They'll probably not make up for the horror games he could've made, but it's not like we can force him, right? l'D

Actually, I don't think The Witch's house would've worked well as a book or a movie at all. A book or a movie requires a substantial amount of plot and character development to actually pass off as a good work of fiction. The Witch's House had no plot at the beginning, nor did it give you any characters to relate to, asides from 'Viola', but as a silent protagonist, it kind of renders character development moot. You were only given a purpose and expected to fulfill it accordingly, which is pretty much what you're expected to do for every other Video Game.

I don't think it would've worked well with any other characters, because think about what little we know about Ellen. She's killed everybody else in the house, and everything else is out to kill the only other living resident(Viola). Another character would've been improbable, so you can't introduce a third character into the equation for Character Development. And besides, had 'Viola' spoken before the end, it probably would've given away her true identity. The only way to properly show the true depth of the story is through a game, where silent protagonists won't be questioned.

I also believe that the scares were quite well-done. It may have overdone the amount of deaths to be had, but I think that was part of the appeal because it made you paranoid, hindering your advancement. The atmosphere also added to that paranoia, and that's really important for a pixel RPG game considering that it doesn't have the graphical capabilities of an actual company produced 3D game.

As for the multiple doomed endings, that's part of the appeal for some horror games, no? The pull of multiple endings gives you /a/ choice. Doesn't guarantee you a good one. Some people like bad endings because even if it's rewarding to get a good end, most of the bad ends are actually more interesting than getting a good ending.

No worries my friend, =w/ I understand passion when I see it. Besides, I also rambled quite a bit. 'M just a girl who likes a good story.

I suppose it wasn't, but I was kind of hoping for one after going through and collecting all 21 gems. Kinda struck me as a bit out-of-character to still have her turning into a psycho when she's risked life and limb for the people murdered by her father. I haven't played Misao - Part of me really wants to, since Mad Father was so good, and I do like scary stuff, buuut part of me is really sick of getting a bad ending as the reward for completeing a game.

He might be branching out?
Well, that'd be interesting - I'd like to see what he comes up with.

Well, I was more thinking a short story (One of those short creepy works, like the type H.P. Lovecraft wrote) oooooor an animated short, since those don't actually require words if done right. But then, I suppose you're right still - The level of interactivity would drop, so you'd feel less guilty, and thereby be less affected. Kinda happy that I died so many times now.

Yeah, it wouldn't have worked as well with additional characters. Still, from a personal standpoint, I didn't at the time know the goal of the game/the point in going through the house, so Viola's repeated deaths really didn't leave an impact. Well, that, and pretty much every death was darkly comical - I mean, in one of them, you get stamped on repeatedly by a skull.

I dunno, I didn't get too paranoid - Mainly because saving was so readily available, and often times it just randomly killed you with very little warning. Since it was very easy to just reload the game after dying, and most of the deaths tended to be 'SPLATyouaredeadgameover', it was about the second death in that I stopped getting worried.
I mean, they had a couple of jump scares that got me, I'll admit, but that's not real fear, since they're interchangable with a guy jumping out of a cupboard wearing a white sheet going 'BOO'. The chase scenes were tense, buuut more of an annoyance to me than a legitimate fear factor, since the monsters in question ran at a ridiculously fast speed, and I tended to bump into walls due to the design of RPG games. Chase scenes are scarier if there's some dread of its approach.

Ib on the other hand, despite having very few scary bits at all, was filled with lairs and lairs of buildup, and despite the general lack of payoff regarding that, the slower-moving creatures gave me a much larger sense of dread, and my liking of the characters made me want to keep them alive.

With multiple doomed endings, I suppose that might be some people's cup of tea, but personally, I don't find hopeless situations scary, just annoying. I mean, if there's no chance of making a positive difference, what's the point of going through Hell to reach the end? Take Silent Hill for instance - Most of them have multiple endings, lots of people die, and the games themselves are gut-wrenchingly terrifying. However, there is always at least one good ending, because without it, there'd be no point. Light makes the darkness seem darker and all that.

In my experience, the formula works best if there's good and bad endings, because then your choices actually mean something - You choose to do good, and you're better for choosing it, or you choose to do bad, and are a worse person for it. Multiple bad endings is like being asked a multiple choice question, and all the choices provided are incorrect. It just creates the urge to scribble the correct answer outside the boxes.

Thanks - Most people get annoyed when I start rambling and ranting about stuff.
