Description This is a friend's OC. She wanted her OC Jenifael wearing a 'cotte-hardie', that is to say a cotte displaying coat of arms.

I was going to paint her just as the medieval lady she is, but as I tried to practice Andrew Loomis's advices for composition (in his book 'Creative Illustration'), I ended up with her having a rose in her hand, and then I wanted to practice light as seen in a speedpaint on Youtube (this one: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj-tFx… you should check it, this artist is amazingly talented) and... well, I added the glow, then I could not pretend it did not look like some fanart of Beauty and the Beast (only more medieval).

I hope you like it!

wow! I love the light coming from the rose. its very very movie scene-like. It's very dramatic with the large range in value and all the warm colors create a very unified piece, but it's almost too unified. Some cool colors would've given this piece a lot of contrast and would've elevated this piece that much more, like shading with some dark, cool colors instead of just changing the value. Color theory is so important and has helped me elevate some of my own pieces. Also, to me, something about her proportions just look off. One thing I do notice is how low the....breasts are. I always draw a line from the neck like a halter neck line to reference where they go. The fact that you listened to a tip from an artist that inspires you though is something i have to applaud you on because that will just help you become better and better and it's something i have a hard time doing (cause i'm stubborn). Listening and paying attention to what your favorite artists say and do will pull your experience in all those direction which will make a very unique art style that will just continue to evolve. anyway keep in mind I'm no professional so take my comments with a grain of salt. I Hope this helps you out cause you already have beautiful art that can only get better!!!

Dear Ash, thank you for your constructive comment. I understand your point with colors, I'm still shy with mixing contrary colors but I'll eventually come to it
I've had a proportion issue with her almost from the start because the head is too big for a realistic drawing. However, about the breasts, I'm not sure I understand why you find them low. They are at their proper place, both according to every tutorial I checked on realistic proportions (the line under the breast is at an equal distance to the armpits line and the elbows line) and according to my own body wearing a bra, and considering their size and weight, and taking into account that Jenifael does not wear bras, because it doesn't exist in her time.
Thanks again for your suggestions and have a nice day!

Such a beautiful drawing! I love it! Jenifael looks amazing and the art style it made me remember the Victorian Age! The "crest" or symbol looks really good. The crown and her face expression give me some "royal" feels, and the flower a more "femeniine/sweet" wave.

I think the dress was shaded really well (I can't do that ) And the light/glow comming from the rose is majestic! Plus the color combination makes this drawing feel vibrant and somewhat warming...but just me! hehe...XD

I know I'm not good to give you a good critique...but I'm honest with all my words, at least, I can tell you all the things your drawing make me think and feel.

hey-yo! from ProjectComment first-timer so i hope i do your piece justice!!

just gotta start out by saying that the colours are awesome! i myself am never too good with colours but yours seem natural and blend into each other seamlessly! gotta nitpick at the front of her dress, though, cause ya can still see the buttons above her sash. im sure its just a layering mistake (been there haha) but it irks me. the lines on her arms, in the dress creases and such are perfect but the lines around her belt-thing (i apologise for this language but im not the brightest), her buttons and her nose seem a bit harsh. all of your lines are brownish which is awesome - but i feel more blending in the areas mentioned should be applied to make them 'less-harsh'. but you're here to practice lighting! it does make it look beauty and the beast-esque haha! you've used the shift of red to purple excellently in the background, but i think the light shone on her face needs a more reddish hue (as the glow itself is red) and i think that same could be applied to the rest of her (although not as harshly on the yellows of her dress as i fear that would make it look a bit odd. more experimenting i suppose!! youve pushed yourself so far with success, can only go more forwards!!)
last thing is her face - i dont want to offend, but it reminds me a bit of louis from family guy. i think you need to bring the eyes down a little and put them a tad further apart to appear more natural. but! i realise it may be an artistic choice and hey, do what you please!!

its so cute i love it!! Jenifael looks beautiful, like her eeriely similar counterpart Belle...

Thanks a lot for this fair comment!

The sash affair: it is not a sash! However I understand the mistake and I should have made it clearer that it was a piece of fabric sewn on the bodice (this is all the point of 'cotte-hardie').
What you say about the lines is very very true, I wondered if I should lighten the line of her nose, for instance, and then chose laziness   I should never give up! Same for the belt, there was something with it that unsettled me but I decided not to bother. About the glow that could be more red: indeed! Thanks for pointing this, it will surely help me next time

I'm still experimenting around facial features... It was intended that this would only be semi-realistic but I need further practice.

Thank you again for your feedback, kind and helpful

no problem!! after staring at it for a while longer i was like 'is it even a sash' but ey its whatever
and youre not really an artist if you choose work over laziness... orz

yeet!

I love it! It's like a modern-medieval look. The effects on the rose and the outfit are so fascinating.
