I'm glad you can enjoy them rather than dislike them because they don't match traditional representation.
I didn't hear nearly as many people complaining about vampires and werewolves being prettied up by Stephanie Meyer.... Hmmmm.... Hypocrisy much?

I don't know...
I myself must admit, I was hating quite a lot agains sparkling vampires and prettyboy-werewolf-underwear-models but the dwarfs seem to be sexy but still dwarfish enough to look like what they're supposed to be. Not every dwarf can look like Balin xDD

I personally feel it's discriminatory to real life dwarves to say 'Dwarves can't be sexy'.
Dwarves can too be sexy. Look at Peter Dinklage. HOT DAMN!!
Dwarves in fiction were drawn to be as 'ugly' as possible to the average 'normal' viewer because when they first became part of stories, discrimination of them was far more widely accepted and their conditions far less medically understood (medically they were not understood at all). Because of this ignorance, people who were not dwarves feared those who were. The way they dealt with this fear was by representing them in folklore as ugly, sometimes evil creatures, to 'justify' and allay their fears. When you can laugh at something, you lose your fear of it.
The better way to lose your fear of course is to educate yourself about that which you are afraid of.
This is why they are traditionally thought of as 'ugly', not because they actually are, but because of how they were portrayed based on fear and hatred (based on ignorance).

The point is that dwarfs (meaning: Dwarfs in Fantasy-Stories) were mostly pictured as a small race of fat, hairy men with a big nose somewhere in the round face.
At least this is what fantasy tought me when I was little and read books about fantasy-worlds. I would've never imagined anybody write about a romance like the one between Kili and Tauriel (even if I personally don't like the role of Tauriel, but that's another topic, I guess) and an Elf-Woman choosing a dwarf over an Elf-Man who's obviously in love with her all the time.
This is why I was surprised of the way the characters were designed in the Hobbit-Movie.
I wouldn't say "Dwarfs are grumpy, old, small, ugly men" and I guess nobody would really do so (other movie-dwarfs, Gimli from the Lord of the Rings also didn't look ugly or something) but also it's not the well-known fantasy-clichee to see sexy dwarfs.
What would people have said if there was an old elf, maybe with a bigger nose and an unexpected dwarf-beard in between? Right: "Wow, I'm surprised. I wouldn't have thought, that there would be elfs looking like this" - and that's just the case with the dwarfs.

The new interpretation of the dwarfs is just so awesome.
I guess there wouldn't have been that many people watching the movies if there just were a bunch of Balins walking around looking all clichee-dwarf-like... xD

Same here xD
This is so damn unexpected. I always imagined dwarves to look like... well... Balin is the best example for how I imagined dwarves. It's so great that there's so much difference in these many dwarves from the movie^^
