Description "Suddenly, it became clear why in that area there were so many ruins with its treasures left untouched..."

____________

Hi everyone, here is my take at one of the most popular fantasy themes of all times: Dragons!!!

The painting this one was a pretty chaotic process, I guess mostly because it started as simple brush test... In any case, I really had a lot of fun, and it was the perfect opportunity to dive into a more classical approach to a fantasy illustration...

Anyway, I hope you like it!!!

As always, I thank everyone for its support, it really means a lot to me!!

Also, I remind you that you are all invited to take a look at my facebook page and my blog !!!

See you around!!!

how on earth do you make a digital painting look like a traditional one

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellixus In reply to dymsgirl0112 [2013-10-16 17:41:25 +0000 UTC]

Well, I guess the main reason is I worked with traditional means almost my entire life... digital it's pretty new for me (I started to work in this media a little less than two years ago); so, I guess there is a part of the traditional mind set that stills survives..

Now, for this particular image I'd say the colour treatment it's pretty matte... with that I mean there's no extreme highlights. Also, I don't use tools like blur or smudge or filters like median very often... it may not be the more popular decision, but I really like the texture... somehow it reminds me of a canvas...

I guess among other things, this maybe the reason it has a certain "traditional look"...

dymsgirl0112 In reply to Ellixus [2013-10-16 19:43:00 +0000 UTC]

well either way it's awesome. How long does this take you? I feel like I could be better if I had more patience, but I am severely lacking it. Backgrounds and details frustrate me and I end up rushing towards the end.

Ellixus In reply to dymsgirl0112 [2013-10-16 21:10:48 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'd say it may take me anything from 4 to 20 hours...  it really depends on the results I'm looking for. A decent piece of concept can easily be done in 4-6 hours, but  more detailed illustration will surely require double that time or more,...

For personal work, I usually spend even more time because I really like to experiment and try different things... in fact, sometimes I don't even finish this types of works because my main goal is discovering something new, so I keep making changes for days and days...

In any case, patience is vital to get better results... and sadly, there is no way around it... ^^

This has been done in Photoshop, although, I may say there are lest expensive software out to work with, I guess I'm just used to work with this particular one ^^

dymsgirl0112 In reply to Ellixus [2013-10-17 18:58:22 +0000 UTC]

ah I see. I use Gimp. It prob isn't the best program out there, but considering I do art for my own pleasure mostly, it works for me.

Ellixus In reply to dymsgirl0112 [2013-10-17 23:32:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, Gimp is a really nice software, specially if you have in mind it's totally free...

I've seen people do really cool works with it, so I guess it just takes some practice to get the better of it... ^^

In any case, I'd say it's a pretty good option if you are starting...

That... does not look right. Part of his backlegs and tail being covered by the ruins, which si impossible.. unless he is INCREDIBLE big. I mean - very large big, almost half of the size ofthese mountains.

Ellixus In reply to gdpr-16812140 [2013-10-16 16:23:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, it is supposed to be pretty big, but I think saying half the size of the mountains it's a bit too much... honestly I can't agree with that...

In any case, thanks for leaving a comment, I'll keep your critique in mind for future works...

Well, this is how you set up a perspectve (size of closer objects help to determine size of further object and vice versa thus setting up a depth) and this is how I perceive it.
