Hey everyone! I will have some different work popping up here soon. This is the first officially finished one.... what do you think!!? I started doing landscapes, but I decided while they were fun for me to make, and pretty even, they were still kind of plain and I couldn't probably ever sell them. Pretty sad, art should be fun..... but of course I'm trying to get art to pay the bills. And my time is so precious, I feel kind of bad about spending time doing something "useless". Art that won't really progress my career or style forward. Simply experimenting.And you know what happened?
Something pretty cool, actually. My experiments turned into a good couple of paintings, where I added some fantasy elements to the canvas to make them more interesting/ me, and I am pretty excited! They remind me of a joke I saw going around on facebook/tumblr/pinterest, where you buy landscapes from thrift stores and paint other things into them. Except I'm doing all the painting!!!! Spending some quality time with Bob Ross

Hello, Dolly! What do we have here? Alrighty, so first of all, the picture itself is very genuine and original in its own right, yet at the same time there are some things about it that aren't completely perfect, like the outlining of the picture and the brush stroking. But nonetheless, it is a picture of extremely high value, excellent quality, and a ridiculously gifted atmosphere, so all in all I would have to say that you have done a very good job with this. My sincerest congratulations go out to you!

Hello there Ellofayne ...I'm commenting in place of the person before you on Tagline 65, picking up the tagword “reflection”. And it is my very great pleasure to be here commenting, as I happen to be rather a fan of your work 
I chose this piece because of the frozen lake. Of course, I was immediately drawn to your “Whale Swamp” piece for this tagword, but you have already had so many constructive comments on it, I thought I would go ahead and choose a different work from your extensive and charming gallery.
This piece makes you shiver. It’s lovely; so cold and deeply evocative of winter, with a strong scent of magic. That big, cold sun drags you in and grips you. (Have you ever read The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis? When I was looking at your piece, I kept thinking: “Low down and near the horizon hung a great, red sun, far bigger than our sun. Digory felt at once that it was also older than ours: a sun near the end of its life, weary of looking down upon that world...”) My memory of that line, and the fact that it popped into my brain like that, definitely did affect my perception of the piece. My instinctive reaction is that it depicts an unearthly scene from outside our world—a place where spirits and wizards are real. I like that a lot about this painting; you can conjure up an image of what this world is like. It’s storytelling.
Compositionally, the elements are solidly placed. I like how the attention is grabbed by the sun, before you are guided down the mountain pathway to the frozen lake. Your use of complementary and analogous colours to support your composition and direct the eye from element to element within the piece is very nicely handled. The lighting is really enticing too. The small touches of ambient and reflected light, and the way the sunlight warms the leaves of the trees, gives a sense of depth. The reflections on the lake are extremely pretty and the way you carried the pinkish hues through onto the snow is a fine touch (although I’m not sure where those pink reflections are coming from!)
The one thing that I think could be improved here is the stag. He looks like an afterthought. I find him rather insubstantial—not in the ethereal, mythical beastie way I would hope for, but in a “literally didn’t notice him at first” kind of way. I think that if he’s in the piece, he should be much more of a focal point, so when my eye tracks from the sun, down the curved path, and to the stag, that stag should be spectacular, with a similar intensity to the sun itself. (There would probably need to be a third, smaller element to the left of the image, in that case, for compositional balance, but hopefully you can understand my meaning.)

Really, this is such a great comment. YES I HAVE READ ALL OF THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA!!!!! This compliment is like beyond the beyond of awesome! I'm glad you think its cold. I wasn't sure with the pinks and reds, and even my brown, burnt sienna, is kind of red, I was worried all those warm colors were going to make it not look cold. And the sun. But I guess there was enough snow to even it out, YES! Check!!!
As for the little stag, that is exactly what he was, an afterthought. All of these landscapes I made really close to each other, but I didn't really.... like them? I dunno, they just weren't really complete. So I took each piece and added a little creature to it to make it more "me". The one mountain one has a little sea dragon, the swamp one I put in the whales (but forgot to make them reflect on any of the water, they literally were just stuck in) and this one has the stag! And I have a couple more that I need to finish and upload too. So this one looked even better than the others in relation to his surroundings, lol! I was kind of going with a "bad photoshop" effect, when someone just sticks a random picture into the surroundings and it looks really off, only this is the traditional painting version of the digital blunder. Ah, so that effect is intentional? Well, art is subjective, but I would probably prefer to see the figures more integrated. (I question how much of the "bad photoshop" effect in the thrift store repaintings is "intentional", and how much it was "unavoidable".) However, that's your artistic choice in the end
Anyway, I really like your paintings and I look forward to seeing more!
