The Universe signifies completion, cosmic union, universal spirit, magnum opus, harmony of the spheres, synergy, the end of the quest, culmination of a development, finding oneβs true place in life, being complete, being one with creation, harmony, equilibrium and joining the cosmic dance.
The traditional card shows a naked woman dancing within an ouroboros and surrounded by the symbols of the four elements: lion, eagle, man and bull. For my own interpretation I replaced the naked woman with a temple dancer surrounded not by the symbols of the elements contained, but by the raw energy and dynamic of the elements manifested. The snake circling back on itself is redundant, since the elements themselves take over the circular motion, forever transforming from one state into the next - earth dissolving into water, water combusting into flame, fire cooling to air and air solidifying into earth in an eternal cycle of change. The dancer goes with the flow, not needing control because she is attuned to the universe.
The Universe is the end and sum of the development of the previous cards. The Magus/hero has come through all the stages of development and eventually finds unity with everything. Where the Magus tried to control his environment and tried to harness the elements to conform to his will and do his bidding, the dancer in The Universe is unconcerned and assured that there is complete harmony between her being and the world she is in. Artists and athletes sometimes talk about "being in the zone" where your intention, your body and your material means simply come together in a completely effortless and joyous way that lets you forget yourself and just become the act you perform. That kind of natural success and being centered in yourself is what this card is all about. The card following the Universe is The Fool as the ultimate expansion contracts again into the cosmic egg and a new cycle commences.
In a spread the World means that we are coming into our own, that we are dancing across our perceived limitations and boundaries, and that we can now see the big picture and find our true calling. We can expect to reach our goals, whether that is the successful completion of a project, finding an occupation that makes us happy and allows us to utilize our talents or being with a partner who "gets" us and makes us happy, just as we are right for them. Good times lie ahead. In a blockage or challenge position the card may urge you to discover your true nature and potential instead of meeting other people's expectations, or to break out of a situation where every little effort feels like a huge drain of energy.
