(2016), pencil on paper, 5.5"x10.5" backed with digital frame.
As the four elements move into the 3s, we see the results of the 2s meeting and interacting. There is a sense of consolidation of opposites and a sense of now being able to “get on with it” to come to grips with something new. The 3s are also aligned with the planet Saturn, the planet the ancients associated with time, with limitations, endings and the boundaries of the solar system. If you connect three points for the first tiem you have a figure where a boundary encloses a finite space, so the association is very appropriate.
For Water and emotions this means that the two previous elements have joined in love and created something more than the sum of the two. This may mean the literal creation of new life, but also inner growth, fulfillment, happiness and the ability to open ourselves up to the fullness of life that surrounds us at all times and being met with generosity, acceptance and success all around.
Traditional versions of the card show either three cups overflowing into one another or alternatively a group of three women dancing with one another holding cups aloft. The sense is always one of joy and ease. Since I wanted to take the cards back to the actual elements I decided to use free-flowing water as a way of showing abundance. Three waterfalls pour down a cliff face shrouded in lush greenery to show the nourishing and life-giving nature of water. The scene is peaceful and perhaps a spot someone would love to sit to feel immersed in nature and beauty.
In a spread the card signifies that if you approach another person or an issue with a spirit of love and compassion you will get an outcome that is supportive and driven by a spirit of generosity and understanding. Abundance urges us to be unafraid to ask the universe for what we need and to respond positively to the needs of others. What you create with love in your heart or what you receive from others who love you will always be more valuable than just the sum of its parts.
For a relationship-related question the card urges you to approach others with love and be open about your needs and wants. You will find that your partner or your friends respond positively to you. Reversely be also prepared to provide abundance for others by giving freely of yourself, your time, your resources and your affection. If the card position points to a business related issue you can be assured that somehow you will get what you need. Rely on your network, put the word out that you are looking for a business opportunity or a new job or an investor and the people who know, love and respect you will put opportunities in your way that you could never find on your own. Don’t be afraid to ask. If someone in your network asks you for a favor don’t hold back either. Help them in turn if you can. In your personal life and development you should move beyond an attitude of closing yourself off or tallying everything you give and receive up against each other. Feel confident that you will get what you need. Take time to connect with others and tell them how much they mean to you. Celebrate your friendships and relationships. You will achieve growth by learning to be open with others.
If the card is uncovered in an adverse or blockage position it could mean that you are ashamed to ask for help. You are so stuck in your need to be self-sufficient that you cut yourself off from others who are willing to lend a hand. Your success is rarely just founded on what you can do, but also on all of the people who believed in you, supported you and cheered you on. Don’t forget that you’re never an island. The card could also mean that you feel that someone is abusing your generosity. Examine carefully if there are people around you who are willing to take and take and never give back.
