Third time making a rainbow cake, with tons of help from my friends! This was the first time we decorated the outside of it, which required us to die the batter AND the frosting each of the 6 colors. It took awhile but it was well worth it!my other 2 rainbow cake pics:

did you use soda and gelatin in the cake?

all you do is dye each layer with food coloring

It depends which color. Orange only needed around 4-6, while purple needed a LOT(maybe around 15!) and red didn't work no matter how many drops we put in(turned out pink)! But you can't taste the food coloring at all so it's okay.
