Today makes 90 years since Popeye appeared in his 1st comic strip.
As one of the first cartoons I've ever seen as a kid, the spinach-powered sailor is still among my all-time favorite characters.
My homage to E. C. Segar for creating such a fun and memorable hero!

A bad enemy but a darn good friend- A compassionate soul inside an ugly carcass- Once Popeye came upon a destitute woman sitting forlorn on a park bench, herself and her children in rags. She had no husband, no job, and had been evicted because she could pay rent. The children are hungry. Popeye had $40,000 cash on him, and he gives half of it to the woman, telling her to buy food and a house for her family. In 1936, $20,000 was a small fortune, and the woman thinks Popeye is crazy for giving her the money, and says so. Popeye replies "When a kind hearted person is seen as crazy, that ain't saying much about a world that supposed to be civilized." Amen. Great tribute, Elton. Segar would've been proud.

I Loved Popeye so much as a kid!! The episode I remember the most was when he was a detective looking for a green emerald and the little tune that came on every time it shined and turned the whole scene green lol
I was hoping we were gonna get a movie soon, they even leaked a teaser but nothing else ever came of it :/

One of the tough gazookas Popeye defeated was Mussolini, dictator of Italy. In the mid 1930s, he banned American comic strips. Italian public opinion forced him to make two exceptions- Popeye and Mickey Mouse. Take that, Il Duce!
