Homeless kids in the streets of Brasov, Romania. August 2006.

Liviu and Tenake have lived in the sewers of Brasov all their life. During the day they come to the railway station looking to grab a purse or waiting for the next paedophile. Begging for food and trying to pass time, hopefully getting through another day. Tenake had just stolen some cigarettes from a tourist. He had attacked me earlier that day, trying to steal my camera, but right now he was enjoying his small victory. Liviu was so high on Aurolac I don't think he knew what he was doing.

Victor is one of the children who was born in a miserable orphanage - a legacy of the Ceasescu era. When he turned 18 he was released. He doesn't have family, friends or anyone else to take care of him, so he lives on the street. He tries to forget the sexual abuse and other nightmares of his childhood by sniffing glue. He uses much more Aurolac than the others. If he continues like this, nobody knows if he will see another year.

George... Nobody knows who'se baby he is or where he is from. The other kids found him half a year ago near the railway station, left behind. Now they take care of him. They named him George. Despite their own misery they can show a profound compassion and care. They cannot properly take care of the baby. They cannot give it the medical attention and hygiene it needs. They cannot feed it every day. But... They refuse to let go of him, to give him to an orphanage. Not in the hands of the society that has, in their eyes, betrayed them.

Most of the kids are ill in some way. Skin diseases from the horrible hygienic condition in the sewers, where they sleep amidst garbage and faeces. Missing fingers or a foot that froze off in winter. Genital diseases from prostitution and rape. Internal diseases from the lack of food and Aurolac, the glue they are high on all day long.

Nikon F70, 24mm f/2.8, all wide-open. The shutter speeds were around 1/30th-1/60th. It was shot on Kodak Tri-X, pushed two stops to an EI of 1600 in Microphen. I used a B+W #25 deep red filter. Scanned on an Epson 4490 flatbed scanner. Some minor photoshop adjustments such as curves, levels and some burning. No cropping.
