Description Every painting I do uses slightly different methods, but this is a basic example. For those who've asked (and anyone else), I hope this helps. Sorry if the type is too small; I can read it on my computer. Hopefully you can too.

hey! Found you! This is a great tutorial, but I got one question left: When you shade from light to dark (esp. skin) how exactly do you do that? I mean after the first wash, do you let it dry, and then deepen the shades? And the most important for that: How do you avoid those hard strokes you get, when dried? because, I always try to do everything in one wash and do it mostly a bit darker, take a dry brush and pull the color off where I want the lighter ares and I always wonder how to do it the other way, without hard lines...

ElvenstarArt In reply to Milui [2006-11-06 01:23:26 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yes, I let the washes dry and then do another wash. I keep building up the washes until I have it as dark as I want it. You just really have to plan out where your highlights are going to be ahead of time if you're going to paint this way. To avoid the hard strokes, what I do is after I put the wash down, I rinse all the paint from the brush (or wet a different, clean one) and then blot it on a paper towel so that it is just damp and brush over that hard edge to blend it in. All of this done before the paint completely dries. Using a damp brush will avoid too much water running into and messing up your washes. Hope that helps!

I finally had some time to read through thte description of the process and I've found it very useful. I got interested with the salt wash technique - how do you do that exactly? I'm very curious about it.
Thank you for showing it to us, it's a great help

ElvenstarArt In reply to manuelka [2005-04-27 02:27:50 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! You start out by painting a wash of watercolor over the area. The more pigment you have in the wash, the more dramatically the salt will effect it. Then you let that dry partially, but so that the paper is still shiney. It won't work if it is too wet, like with pools of water on the paper. Then you sprinkle the salt over the wash. Any kind of salt will work, but from my experience, rock salt will give you the most dramatic effects such as here [link] While kosher salt or regular table salt give you a more suble look like in [link] But it is really quite unpredictable and often depends on the paint. Some colors seem to work differently from others. Last, you let it dry completely and then you brush the salt off.

Ohh, that's how it works... a very neat trick, thank you! I do have some rock salt, maybe I'll try this

I'm currently doing a water color for someone who asked to get their line art colored. ^.^ I'll put it up when I'm finished and I'd love for you to critique my work. ^.^ Your advice would be most welcome.

Coolness!! I wish I could draw and paint like that. I'm not that good with color paints, but I love to do pencil sketches and shades with pencils. I guess I'm a black and white person at heart. I love it! It's so nice of you to take your time and go through your painting method step by step. ^.^ I've learned so much from this!
