Description Sculpted in Polymer Clay. I used colored polymer clay for everything with the exception of the small purple spots on the fish face and body which I painted with acrylic. The eyes, all other spots, and the stripes on his tail are made using different canes of blended colors. I enjoy making the canes. The fish is built over a chicken egg and rattles (I always like to put something inside the eggs to make noise). The little fish rider is about 1.5" sitting and was built over a wire armature. His face reminds me of a Hun. He is removable.
I have some detail shots that show his face and the fish face better in my scraps.
I like this little sculpt

Now that is so neat! Polymer clay is so much fun to work with, but it's been a while since I used it. I love the choice of colors, all the different textures you incorporated in the figures, and the patterns you painted on the fish. He looks so sweet! I also like how the fish rider's vivid colors contrast a bit from the fish's muted palette. Maybe it says something about their personalities, or relationship with each other?

This is a really fun and imaginative piece, great job!

wow that is awesomely awesome. its really good at producing a magical type of feeling, even just the picture of it. it must be so much more magical in real life. i have one techinical question though: how does our little elf type guy friend up there hold his breath under the water while he's riding his fishie? Or does the fishie swim on land? or is it just magic? regardless! i love this piece. its gorgeous.

Thank you so much for you really nice comments on him. I am smiling!

yep, this piece is made from many different blends of clay and canes, I don't have a clue how many hours it took - I tend to become quite mesmerized when I work and time has no meaning. I am flattered by your comment because I always wanted to illustrate a children's book. Thank you!

saffronscarf [2006-06-08 01:24:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh man, Sculpy clay! I love that stuff; I'm always amazed by what people can do with it. This looks like an storybook illustration brought to life ("Rainbow Fish" in particular). The spots are beautiful. How did you blend that cane so smoothly?

Wow, your gallery makes me want to get back into working with polymer clay again. Amazing stuff you do.

I know that story - Rainbow Fish - sharing his beautiful scales with the other fish. Thank you for that compliment because I really liked the illustrations in that book.
The cane I used for the spots was made using the "Skinner Blend" technique. Here is a really good tutorial on how to make it [link] So with that, you are now challenged to pick up that clay and play, play, play!
