'The Peacock Mask'

For more detailed photos of this mask please check out my mask-making journal, here: [link]-This mask is COMPLETELY hand-sculpted out of Craft Porcelain air-dry clay. The clay feathers are individually sculpted and attached by hand, the feather details were carved with a sculpting tool. No stamps or molds were used. The little curly bits are covered in gold leaf and then sealed in with glossy, clear polyurethane, as is the beak.
The backside is finished off with a decorative brocade fabric for both looks and comfort and then edged in a black braided trim.
The mask is a tie-on which is attached via a blue velvet ribbon. The peacock feathers are real, but store-bought so have already been fumigated...no bugs to worry about.
Fits most face sizes and the nose is roomy for comfort.

-I have no problem reproducing this mask. As each mask is completely handmade, with no molds used, each mask is a one-of-a-kind piece.

This mask is gorgeous..~ If I had the money I would most certainly buy one, maybe soon. I love peacocks, I love masks, and this is most possibly the most beautiful combination of the two I've ever seen. Kudos!

Well.. you said you charge $150 for a specialized piece of work that took you 24 hours to do. That's $6.25/hour... I don't know what minimum wage is like in your area but mine is $10/hour. That's the price we pay teenagers to work at McDonalds or Walmart. And that's not taking into account the cost of your paints, foil (liquid or otherwise!) and clay, ribbon and whatnot. Then the time it takes to set up and photograph and then upload, etc. Or the time it took you to learn how to do such a fabulous mask in the first place! I really can't estimate what it costs to make the mask but I figure at best you're making $5/hour off of it. As much as we'd all love to make things affordable for everyone.. artists need to eat too! $5/hour hardly seems fair for such exquisite work.

Oh believe me, I TOTALLY agree with you!! Lol! I 'wish' I could charge more for these masks as they are very time and effort intensive, not to mention -as you said, the cost of materials. Hell, I just dropped $21.00 yesterday (in addition to a 40% coupon for one item) on a few materials for an up-coming Autumn Fairy mask I've been meaning to make for a while now. And that was just on some floral items (each of which were already marked down 50% off), some rhinestones, paint, and liquid gold foil. And that's not even clay or backing materials, ribbons, paint brushes, etc.
But, I have to be realistic, too. I realize that one mask is not going to take up an entire bottle of paint or a whole floral branch, etc. So I have to divide my supplie's cost over x-amount of masks as one bottle of acrylic paint will last me for several masks. Rhinestones, are another matter though...
-I also have to keep in mind what my customer-base might be willing to pay. It's pointless of me to make a bunch of masks solely for the purpose of selling them, but then raise the price up so high that no one is willing/or able to purchase them, unfortunately.
I came to the figure of $150 because I felt that it was worth it to me to put in that much time and work, plus people would be willing/able to afford that. Plus, it would at least cover my supply costs.

Wow. They feathers are all made of clay? wow. It amazes me that you have the patience to do something like this so well. There is no way I'd be able to focus long enought to do something this amazing.

Yep, I sit and sculpt each feather with my fingers before I attach it to the mask and then add the details from there. It definitely is repetitive and it gets more difficult the smaller the feathers get, too. But it's worth it.

I only ever made one of it and it sold a while back. If you'd like one I can take on a commission of it for you. Since it would be a commission, it wouldn't be a sale price, though.

The peacock mask was very light, I don't recall it being any heavier than 2 to 3lbs. at most.

Wow! Amazing detail... How did you come up witht he white backbone of each of the individual feathers - truely cool!

I'm not sure which 'white backbone' you are referring to...but I used a tool to carve the details into each feather and then painted over them and added more detail with paint.
