Description
Black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) - our largest european woodpecker. Here, in Poland, it is not as quite common as great spotted woodpecker, but it is more often seen than green woodpecker. It prefers mature forests with many old trees. It doesn't migrate. Very easy to recognize species, because of its black glossy plumage, red cap (males have it larger) and yellow eyes.
