Vaellen is not the most forthcoming of wolves, and he tends to shy away from attention when it comes his way. This comes mostly from Solveig always shining brighter compared to him, and the feeling that he never really had anything useful to contribute, despite encouragement to speak up from others.

He also tends to stumble through many social interactions; often times speaking to a group, or even some one on one conversations can cause him immense anxiety and bring on awkward pauses in his speech along with lots of "uh" and "um"s. However, if he's comfortable around someone, his speech tends to flow much better and he'll relax a bit.

When he's trying to learn something though, he becomes fairly focused on the task at hand. After he worked so hard to learn all the techniques he now knows (see history), he has learned to tune out distractions and become enveloped in what he's trying to do. This can come out as him ignoring someone (or even being a little sharp!) while he's fishing or otherwise occupied. If it's not a pressing activity, he will, of course, make time to interact.

Overall, he is fairly willing to be friendly and move out of the way for others, sometimes even willing to get stepped on in the process. Most of the time he is relaxed and pretty mellow, but there are times when he'd really rather not be bothered, and that might reflect in how he acts in the moment. He's a slower learner, but if you give him time to adapt, he can be very helpful.

Has a hard time saying "no."

Backstory:

The events leading up to the conception of Solveig and Vaellen were... odd. When the loner Kjellaug, or "Kjell" as most called her, began her stay with the wolves of Selcouth, she was fairly skittish. She wanted to learn the ways of the pack, but was rather unsuccessful with the stationary nature of pack life. But she caught more than fish while she learned the ways of the Selcouth... She also snapped up the eye of Ragnheidr.

Ragnheidr was a skilled Heron, and had served the pack for a long time. He was one of those who had first welcomed Kjell into the pack's umbrella of sanctuary, and had dedicated much of his time in trying to help her learn advanced swimming and fishing techniques. She unfortunately was never particularly good at any of them. He had hoped that she would soon take the initiation rite, but a small issue came up. Kjell discovered that she was expecting. In favor of the safety for the unborn pups, she insisted that she was not yet ready to partake in the rite.

She tried to do what she could while the pregnancy was still young, as she felt bad taking up the Selcouth's resources; but there was only so much that she could do. As she was nearing her due date, she had made up her mind. The pups were born healthy and grew quickly, but once they were fully weaned...

The next time Kjell was seen by the wolves of Selcouth was at the bottom of a ravine, impaled by a branch, blood dripping from her still corpse.

As for the pups... we find ourselves now looking at two brown and white pups, named Solveig and Vaellen. Ragnheidr took care of them since the unfortunate death of Kjell. They were devastated by the loss, but vowed to raise the pups to be the strongest wolves that Selcouth had ever seen. They taught the pair everything they knew, and soon sent them off to become trained by the mentors of the pack.

Vaellen followed around in his sister's shadow growing up. Like her name suggested, she was truly a daughter of the Sun, with a golden halo round her head whenever she walked. She had all the natural talent in the family, was always the best at fishing, even playing games as pups. He was never really envious of her natural talent, since he was just as happy living near the fringes. But on occasion he wished that he wasn't so far behind her.

He was slower to learn the tactics of fishing and hunting, but he tended to stumble over his paws, especially as a younger pup. But despite him falling farther and farther behind his sibling and some of the other wolves his age, he had the determination to keep trying. There was an older wolf in the pack who was getting to the end of her days as a tasked wolf and looking to retire. But even as other wolves looked past him to find better stewards of the future, she saw something in his heart.

She took over the majority of his training, teaching him with different methods that favored a more slow learning style. They would learn the step, and go over it again and again, day after day until he perfected the step. Then they would move on to the next one, moon after moon until finally, he succeeded.

With that success he became bolder in what he tried, and he and his mentor took the same approach to other tactics. Hunting, fishing, fighting... they were all coming to hi much easier now that he had help with learning them. He managed to catch up with many of denmates, though he never did catch up with Solveig (much to her friendly teasing).

When the water rose, he had to adjust quickly with the rest of the pack. He, Solveig, and Ragnheidr stuck close together, while almost losing Solveig to a massive piece of driftwood. They were temporarily separated from the rest of the pack as they escaped the flood waters, but caught up with them within the sanctuary of the Trinity. The relief of having escape the flood was set back to grief when they caught word of what had happened. Amund was dead- and not only that, but leadership had changed paws twice while they were away.

Vaellen, of course grieved for the loss of the beloved leader, but didn't know them very well in the first place. But he moved on fairly quickly, not finding that there was much to adjust to for himself.

As it is today, he is now looking forward to becoming a tasked wolf!
