Description Just a try to draw a horse in this position. It turned out ok but I don't like it how strongly I've outlined it... well, this is not a new drawing and I hope I'm learning to do some things in a different way.

I used this as an idea for a horse I drew! It's in my gallery, you should look at it... but the picture doesn't show it all that good =[

Thanks for showing the image to me and putting in the description a link back to my drawing. You did a nice job, but I'd suggest you to always ask the owner of the original work a permission before you submit your version of their work. In this case I don't mind but I'd be happier to know of it beforehand. And in some cases it is not even in the artist's hands to give anyone permission to reproduce the image because the owner of the original reference photo might not like it. I'm sure you mean no harm but for everyone's sake, make a habit of asking permission first and you'll avoid any possible trouble.

Thank you. I used colour pencils, so nothing too special behind this.

Wow, this really looks like my favourite Dutch warmblood horse, Poisson(v. Furioso II)! That markings are really the same!

P.s.: Sorry for my bad English, I come from the Netherlands and I'm just 13..

That's interesting to hear, you don't happen to have a photo of this horse for me to see?

And your English is just fine, don't worry about it. When I was 13 my English was so hopeless I wouldn't ever have dared to say a word here.

I'm replying terribly late as usual... sorry.

This looks like a paint mare I used to take care of at the barn. Her name is Layla, and this mare has a remarkable resemblence. I don't think you outlined her to strongly, it just makes her stand out a bit more and makes her look more beautiful. It's a tricky pose, but you mastered it! *fav*

Thank you for the kind comment, I'm glad to hear you liked this. I've drawn this so long ago... I try to avoid that kind of outlining nowadays, but it's nice to know it doesn't look that bad.

kinda like the outlining on this one, but im really not a fan overall. coloring is wonderful though. great tones and shades. i think that trying a different more intricate background instead of the same green grass blue sky would be good for a change too

Looks amazing.
As said earlier the fur is really realistic!
I personally think your coloured drawings look better than your black and whites. And your black and whites are already astonishing!

Thanks for your kind comments again.

People hardly ever compare my coloured and b&w drawings, so this was an interesting thing to hear. I know a coloured drawing can be a lot better than b&w when I manage to do it well... but when you spend several hours on making the b&w drawing first and you like how it turns out, it makes you think twice if to colour it at all as it's very easy to ruin a nice b&w drawing with colours.

stukchocolat In reply to Embers [2004-07-29 12:07:33 +0000 UTC]

I know the feeling of being afraid of ruining a nice black and white with colour.
What I've done in the past was just made a copy of the original black and white, and then trying to start coloring the copy. If it seemed to be OK, I tried to colour the originals, if not, I just kept it black and white...

It's strange that people hardly compare your coloured and you b&w drawings. A rather obvious thing to do, for me at least. Perhaps I'm strange - that's what they say about me...

Making a copy and trying to colour it first sounds actually like a good idea. Thanks, got to think about trying that sometimes.

Oh, you're said to be strange too? Welcome to the club then. *grins*

Oh gosh. Strong outlining is ok in this, because the viewer's - at least mine - attention goes to colouring. It is amazing. And I mean it. Incredible. I like your style very much! Hmm...
