It actually brought to mind a question I've had for a long time, too! How do you navigate using copyright-based characters in an academic (and professional) setting? Do you just remove all of the Pokemon-based aspects of them and go from there? o3o

In this case since I'm planning on making a story that's not involved with pokemon gijinka, yes i just removed the gijinka element from the story as a whole. Yes they're are still character designs based on my gijinkas but they themselves are not gijinka if that makes sense oTL
But when it comes to the academic standpoint they're really okay with using copyrighted material. In fact it's encouraged as many of us will get jobs working at companies where we will be drawing for the people who have the copyrighted characters.
I've only done one project using my gijinkas as such and there wasn't a problem. But many of my classmates use spiderman or Disney characters. There's even a comic on display in our building lobby that used munnas xD i think as long as we aren't trying to claim them as our own it's okay? Idk. XD
