Description A practice in backgrounds and a way for me to showcase my ideas on saiyan culture. This will be one of three or four.

Vegetan History of Housing:

After the exodus from Saiya to escape the destruction of the Legendary Super Saiyan, the few that could fit into the ships landed on Vegeta. They dwelled in houses carved into the cliffs in the desert regions in family groups of around ten or more. They spent around two hundred years living on the blink of survival until the clash with the Tuffles. After the victory they declared the leading General Vegeta, King Vegeta the first and found themselves thanks to the crops and fertile lands that the Tuffles had horded, more food and resources than they knew what to do with. Despite their newfound prosperity, they dwelled in the ruins of Tuffle cities. It wasn't until the Arcossians arrival during the reign of Vegeta the Fifth that the Saiyan were given technology. The Arcossians were shocked by the cramped and decrepit conditions that the Saiyans lived in and quickly began to build "proper housing". These houses were based on the Arcossian model which were much like apartments due to the overpopulation on Arcoss. However, the Saiyans continued to live in large family groups even in the cramped apartments. It was until King Vegeta the tenth that the apartments were replaced with small room or barracks that were only around to house one saiyan unless mating. This began the Saiyan's destruction of the family unit.

Typical Housing:

The typical saiyan home is a small room 3 meters by 3 meters. There are two lights on the upper sides of walls. One above a single bed which is standard in all rooms regardless of class and the other is above a dresser/trash and laundry disposal duct. The basic design is only changed slightly depending on class. The floor is more comfortable for the upperclass and less for the lower. Painting the room is illegal for all who are not in the highest class. The room is designed to discourage a saiyan from being in it for long periods and in turn discourage private thought.

I never liked the idea of saiyans having houses and cute little families. I always thought that since they were warriors and didn't care about their own fresh and blood, they'd live in something more like a barrack or dormitory.

OH wow!! this is simply fantastic!!
I've actually envisioned Saiyan barracks looking almost completely identical to this (minus the lights, those lights are UBBER spiff! the lights I envisioned were just a single over-head light) but I never could seem to find the time (or patience) to put it together.

Love your theories.

I always kind of imagined them this way. Probably since the Frieza saga or perhaps earlier. I assumed that they didn't live in houses because that would encourage loyalty to those you live with and not to a king or employer. The saiyajins were supposed to be the ultimate fighters and bred, raised and conditioned to kill without other loyalties. Plus the more chaotic the saiyajins were the most structured their lives needed to be. Or it'd be anarchary. XD

These were fun to do.
