Description FULL VIEW PLEASE!

The 2009 version of Princess Ariel was one of the most popular images in my gallery for quite a while, so I figured it would be quite a good choice for a re-draw (something I've never done before). I think I've kept the essence of the picture the same, whilst updating it in terms of style...and obviously I'd like to think there's been some improvement!

Ariel isn't mine, and a reference was used for the roses.

[EDIT] Ahaha so many conflicting opinions *facepalm* I guess that might be the case, but it's still interesting. The original idea was along the lines of "posing for some sort of portrait", which is why I toned down the hair and stuff

She looks like an old woman in the 2009 one, but the robe was nice. Good job with the redraw.

Wow! The original was wonderful on its own, as well as the updated version. If I viewed them separately, I would be impressed with each, thoroughly. Side-by-side, I can still appreciate both, though the newer one definitely catches my eye more. Β There is more detail to attract the eye.

Emily-Fay In reply to allexandru [2013-09-30 08:36:26 +0000 UTC]

I felt that it would be a more natural size for Ariel *shrug* She's not particularly busty anyway and I went overboard in the first picture.

I don't critique things often, but I just ... wanna do this in a comment without the fanciness of it all. First I wanna say I love love both pieces. You have such a beautiful style and I'm so jealous, I wish I could work with digital art the way you do, specifically the colors.

Comparing the two is fun, I love coming back to your piece from my favorites just to look at your improvement over the three years between these pieces. So here are some things I have come up with by returning to look at this to compare the changes you've made.

The first is so energetic compared to the other, with the brighter colors, hair movement and the way that she takes on the pose. She's looking directly at us, which I love. I've read your editted comment on the piece in your artist comment about how she was more posing for a portrait, which I can tell when comparing the two on some level. You can see the patterns and the glitter-sparkle effect on her dress, which I adore about her outfit.

The second is less energetic, but it still holds some beautiful movement. Her pose makes me think she's being shy, but flirty. The softer colors helps into that idea as well. I love that you took the glitter-sparkle from the dress and included it in the dress, even though it's not as much. (I'm a sucker for glitter, yo.)

My favorite difference is the skin color and the hair. The skin from the first just glows radiance and the second has a gentle glow that is alluring. I actually strife to get to that point in my coloring, just as much as I want to be able to do hair the way you have in both. Her hair is so beautifully done in the first and I can't miss the strands you did here and there along the way it falls to convey movement. You've taken that style and given it more depth for the second. You gave her more highlights and low lights and the way you've portrayed the curls in her hair in the second just makes me want to draw.

The backgrounds are gorgeous to each respectful piece. The first is simple, doesn't have any shading or anything and looks like the perfect pattern growing from behind her. The second has full-budded roses done in a gentle color. You've really inspired me to try out doing flowers again, which I haven't done in a long time nor expressed much of on dA.

Your use of color and depth have changed and made all the difference, growth in your artistic skill that are very visible. There is just so much more and I'm sure I'll find more things to say about your recolor when I look this later. I just wish I knew how to express everything I see and love about this recoloring, but until then, I'm going to leave it at this.

Oh wow, thank you so much for taking the time to leave such thoughtful commentary. I'm both honoured and flattered! <3 Really, thank you! I feel any response from me will be inadequate but I'm so glad you enjoy both pieces and that my work makes you want to draw. That makes me very happy indeed
