Description Brazilian soldiers during an attack against the paraguayan fort of Curupaiti, september 1866. 20.000 brazilian soldiers stormed the fort, guarded by 4 to 5.000 paraguayan soldiers, and were pushed back again and again. Amongst 4000 to 9000 brazilian soldiers died, agains less than 100 paraguayans. The attack was made against a strong position, and with a heap of mud to hamper the advance.

South America never had any major wars until the Paraguay war. That was when we decided to play Europe and start one, which was our largest, in number of men, duration, casualties and material damage.

The war lasted from 1864 to 1870, and involved Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay against Paraguay. Some people say it was nothing more than England wanting to end Paraguay's dictator Solano LopΓ©z leadership, but what most historians agree is that it was caused by - as usual - comercial and political interests among the participating nations here on South America.

The thing is, we don't have the european expertise at mass killings, and we suck at this. from the 140.000 brazilians who fought at the war, more than 50.000 died, as well as 18.000 argentinians and 3.000 uruguayans, and 2/3 of the casualties were caused by diseases rather than combat, since it was fought on marshes, swamps and thick forests. Our leaders had constant fights with each other, and the brazilian, uruguayan and argentinian soldiers had to pay the price for their disagreements, sometimes delaying attacks, supplies, and oftenly costing their lives.

Brazil decided to utterly destroy paraguay and kill LΓ³pez. The alliance defeated paraguay, and some sources estimate that almost 70% of the Paraguayan population died during the war, from different causes. Paraguay's economy was destroyed and even today they have a hard time trying to recover.

and, as always, the scanner fucked it up.

All man, I know about this. This is the war of Triple Alliance, the most devestating war in South America history. It was a frighting war with Selfish and Egomanic Leaders.

Yeah, it was the final proof that we definitely don't know how to wage a decent war around here!

this is a great depiction of the chaos of colonial era warfare I like how you were able to make all the soldiers so uniform looking; I've got a hard time doing that

Actually I think they were not that standard, since the brazilian army whas somewhat ill-equipped. But yes, it was a bloody mess!

Thanks again ebony

Damn... kind of makes one feel sorry for Paraguay. I mean, it's three countries ganging up against one and two of those countries are the biggest on the continent.

Nonetheless, great drawing.

EmirHamam In reply to Nederbird [2011-03-30 16:50:05 +0000 UTC]

Paraguay actually had a greater army at the beggining, and some say they started it. But it was actually a war everyone expected and were willing to join, and everyone is to blame.

Yeah, I normally try to findo sources that are not wikipedia, luckly I have several books about the subject. But the good old wiki sometimes is pretty good and accurate!

Thanks Lamancha!

I try not to predicate my knowledge strictly to wiki also, but sometimes it's the only online source available. Accuracy depends on the people inputting the data (GIGO)

Quite welcome
