Slyth, still deep in thought, asked, “Why is the city dangerous?”
Bijou, without turning from her path, answered, “That’s the area the most unstable characters live. Nobody exactly knows why, but some characters are just more fragile in every sense of their being than others, as if they’re just an afterthought of some sort.”
Slyth looked confused again and asked, “Characters? What does that mean?”
“The most popular theory about how this world works, is that everyone who appears here must be the product of a thought from someone or something from a higher state of being. Most characters here have come to accept it, but some like to believe other things, which is fine as well. I for one, though, think that it all pretty much adds up, don’t you?”
Slyth mumbled, “I guess.”
“The appearance in random places, the utmost complete diversity in the matter of which every character looks and behaves, some having actual memories of their own creators. It just... makes sense. That and… the so called, ‘faders.’” Bijou’s expression turned forlorn.
“Faders?” Slyth asked tentatively, after Bijou stopped elaborating.
Bijou hesitated. “Are you sure you want me to keep talking? I’ve told you so much already, surely it must be overwhelming? I don’t want you to feel horrible after you just arrived… I’ll tell you later, okay?” Bijou turned to smile weakly back at Slyth.
Slyth felt uneasy.
“Besides, look, we’re here!”
