“On the day of judgment, this fluttery fiend will fly into action. Brought into existence by “the greatest warrior in the galaxy” and reborn as a knight of doom through years of adversity—now begins an epic battle with a pure being twisted by a dark past.”

Occasionally I have a moment where I understand the true nature of something in an instant, and when I read that this mysterious knight was "a pure being twisted by a dark past" I understood everything that is Morpho Knight. Everything. So I used that quote as inspiration for this drawing. There's a ton of symbolism in this one because of the lore and mystery that surrounds the Butterfly.
The background is the same one we see in Super Star Ultra during the flashback of Galacta Knight's past, the dark past that I believe the Butterfly was twisted by. Morpho is even in the same place as Galacta, representing how they've become one in the same. Many butterflies are coming out of the fire due to the presence of the Butterfly before and after disaster strikes, as well as butterflies symbolizing the souls of the deceased in some cultures.
And those aren't just any butterflies fluttering around, I use many species from the genus Morpho ! (They'll all be listed at the end.) And I've heard that Morpho Knight is indeed a Morpho butterfly, because no other species has that wing shape. As such, I altered the Butterfly's design to somewhat resemble an Anaxibia Morpho, because this species (besides being blue, not orange and yellow) closely resembles the Butterfly's design. I also added tails on its lower wings to match Morpho's wings.
Speaking of Morpho, I made a big change to Morpho Knight's design: Its wings. I thought the one colour thing made them look plain and boring, so I made them the same pattern as the Butterfly. This made the biggest difference, they look so much better! In fact, next time I draw Morpho I'm gonna do them the same way. Everything else is pretty much the same because I love Morpho's design so much. If I ever draw Morpho Knight EX, its wing pattern will be that of a Sunset Morpho instead.
I'd forgotten how much I like butterflies until I started working on this. The more pictures of them I looked at, the more I grew to love them and their beautiful wings. I even took more notice than usual of the few that hang around our lilac bush (sadly, there aren't any orange ones). Needless to say, I've gained a new appreciation for our fluttery friends.
From left to right, top to bottom, these are the butterflies I used:
In the air:
Anaxibia Morpho (Morpho anaxibia) [Modified to be orange and yellow and have tails on its wings]
Cisseis Morpho (Morpho cisseis)
Morpho polyphemus luna/luna
In front of the rocks:
Helena Blue Morpho (Morpho helena)
Achilles/Blue-banded/Banded Morpho (Morpho achilles)
Sunset Morpho (Morpho hecuba)
Peleides Blue/Common Morpho or The Emperor (Morpho peleides)
Giant Blue Morpho (Morpho didius)
Made with ArtRage Lite and an Intuos tablet. Morpho Knight is property of HAL Laboratory and Nintendo.
