I really love the composition of this piece. It's got just enough of an uneven slant to make the perspective seem just off, but not incorrect - just like it should be in wonderland. I also really like how the cards frame her. Great stuff! I don't know how I missed seeing this before...

ah thanks, my troll like friend (yr words not mine)
it all came together in the end.... i always had it in my minds eye that the cards would frame her, so I'm glad you see it that way. In the original Alice illustrations i think she's fighting them off, but i wanted my Alice to be a bit more feisty, so she's sat there unbothered!!
i think the uneven slant is because i did the floor/perspective totally freehand. i did try with the vanishing points and doing it all absolutely correctly for the chequerfloor but it never went how i wanted it, so i just ended up drawing it freehand how i wanted, which you're right would make it imperfect, but that's perfect for Wonderland

I've never really thought of doing an Alice just because she's such a well established character that I'd find it hard to do a version of her without the Disney Alice beating me over the head with what she should look like the whole time. It's the same reason that when I illustrated some Mother Goose rhymes I stayed away from all of the well known ones just because I didn't want to have any preconceived ideas of what the charcters should look like.

I guess sometimes my brain just gets in the way...

a really really good gallery just took English Rose and Tiger-lily off me to hang for sale, i have my fingers crossed that they do. i have sold in little galleries and cafes before, but this is my first 'proper' big break
I just hope someone walks in and falls in love with one of them

i always meant to do an Alice, and it was supposed to be an experiment in being more creative and adventurous in my subjects, and fun too
but then it turned out quite symbolic, not to go too much into it, but now i see her like in the eye of the storm - calm in a crisis, like me
i liked doing a 'brave' Alice too

You're right the blue is very me, i go look at my gallery and it seems to be the dominant colour throughout - which must mean something??
I found bits of this quite hard to paint as i don't really like the colour red, but thought that it would suit that chair best - gold frame, red chair, very regal!
