that's ok, i didn't know either, i only just discovered her myself, and have become quite taken with her
i have very limited knowledge, but she was a doll that was produced in 1972, then discontinued, but has now come back as a cult item. they sell for hundreds of pounds from what i can tell on ebay and have avid collectors world wide who are taking these dolls to another level in terms of customising their hair, skin, eyes everything. they do photoshoots with them and have competitions, they are a very big creative outlet for a lot of people, and for a lot of those same people the doll is also of huge personal value to them
i have seen a girl in flickr who has had her basic dolls turned into marie antoinette, or a vampire with little teeth, the makeovers can be quite extreme, but the clever thing is in essence its all the same basic dolls. there are some seriously beautiful photoshoots!!
you could check out [link] to see some of the more extreme stuff
Personally, I'm really interested in how just with a change of eye colour, clothing, or hairstyle the doll's whole persona can totally change - just like with us humans. And I specifically love painting them for their human qualities. It is an inanimate object, and yet full of life and character. To emphasise this further, I always ask the doll's 'mom' to name the painting, I ask them to describe their doll's character in just one word, and the results so far have been really fascinating to me. I'm gonna do a series, how many i don't know, the pin-ups are not forgotten, this is just a fun new discovery and diversion
i wrote too much didn't i?! now you wish you didn't ask

So, Cats are buying something old, Discontinued, and hard to come by, and completely destroying it? And all in the name of selfishly making something of unique creative expression?
It's like little doll HotRodding!
That's some wild stuff, Rosie.
So, am I to understand that is this a commissioned portrait of somebody elses Doll?

Oh goodies! I'm running on my last bit of creative fuel for awhile I think. I was hoping to have big plans this year, maybe more gallery stuff and such, but my heart's not in it right now. I think although the money is tempting that I will have to pass up a few gigs for a bit. Then when the brain motor decides to turn over I will only paint what inspires me for a few months. I don't think I could possibly do another pin up right now without barfing in my mouth a little bit. Everyone and their mom is doing similar stuff right now and its driving me up the wall!

don't get hooked on collecting them, you'll need to get a 3rd and 4th job to pay for it like some of my friends. I swear it is more expensive than a crack habit, it starts with a Blythe doll, then you move up and onward to the more expensive ones.

haha, the dark side of Blythe!
i think i'll be content with painting them, its a lot of fun, there's is so much choice i wouldn't be able to choose (or afford) to buy just one!
