Where had the time gone? Young Blanchette, or "Red" as her friends called her, hadn't noticed nightfall creeping in, bathing the woods all around her in twisted inky shadows. She'd been following a grazing doe as it nibbled its way through the sedges, shrubs and twigs, mesmerized by the creature’s beauty. It was only when the deer suddenly bolted off into the shadowy woods that she realized she had strayed far from the path and was now all alone in the consuming darkness.

As she tried to get her bearings, she felt a sudden sense of uneasiness. There was a prickling on her skin. Something was near. She listened, but heard nothing at first. There was only an eerie silence. No birds were chirping or frogs croaking. Even the soft wind she'd felt before had ceased.

That's when she heard a sound behind her. Too afraid to turn around, she slowly tugged at the hood of her cloak to listen more carefully to whatever it was that had stirred in the darkness. What was that sound? Was that just the wind? No, there was a rhythm to it. Breath. Something was breathing close by. Very close by.

Before she could turn around, a low, guttural growl rumbled behind her. Her eyes widened. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. Consumed by terror, she tried to scream but all she was able to manage was a hoarse, hollow cry...

The blood. There was so much blood. The grass, the foliage, the trees all became a sickening canvas... painted blood red.
