-----------------------------------------------

WOW that was an intense piece of work, and it's far from over I hope this is fully readable and enjoyable, cause I'm never sure about my own level of English I started that cause I received some requests about how to draw reptiles, dragons and so. There are some tutos existing but they are generally pretty specific or are only talking about one style at a time. I wanted to make something far more exhaustive.

It is not a guide that will fully teach you how to draw. It is a batch of guidelines and tricks I use to draw reptiles ; I am sure that, if you have a hard times drawing dragons and stuff, reading this will give you a help on it, maybe even ideas. Please comment if you have any question regarding that, if something isn't clear...

-----------------------------------------------

Part one : Reptilian heads

I tried here to explain everything about reptile heads and details, like eyes, teeth, maws... How they look like, and how to draw them properly.

Thank you very much for these.  I have a frilled lizard based character, and while I looked up images of lizards online, as well as how others have tackled some of the face shapes, drawing her face from different angles is challenging.

The ruff around the neck of the lizard must be tough to work with It took me ages to learn to draw lizard faces from many angles, personally .

I actually solved the problem of lizards not normally having hair by converting her frill into something like long hair.

This is quite old and I am slowly working on an updated version, but this should give you an idea of how I stylized it.

That's a neat idea, she really looks cute I have a character with frills too, but I tried it all a different way : Sketchdump - Wither
I'd like to see the updated version actually. don't hesitate to tell when it's up

Genisay In reply to EMP-83 [2017-06-10 23:44:41 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, that's a cool way to do it too.

No major changes in mind for the update.  Mostly just solidifying the designs a bit more and further stylizing her to fit better with the characters she's meant to interact with.  I've been meaning to get a ref sheet done for her for a while.  Also, I have a doodle I need to finish that illustrates her frill popping open when she's startled or alarmed enough. This would be a good indicator for her of just how bad something has gotten, as she's normally very reserved and calm. XD

in all of my drawings i never give my dragons an eye ridge and its always a blank expression (zombie XD) i have a hard time with expressions and making my dragons look like they have muscles

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EMP-83 In reply to haloveteran [2014-02-12 09:32:24 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, that's like not having eyebrows on a human face. It's something that could totally delete any expression.

haloveteran In reply to EMP-83 [2014-02-12 17:46:33 +0000 UTC]

i need to work on that XD

do i need to show any muscle definition with the dragons body?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EMP-83 In reply to haloveteran [2014-02-12 19:56:44 +0000 UTC]

It all depends on your states I'd say I've seen people drawing with or without, so it's your choice to make. If you can see muscles, he will generally look skinnier but stronger

full body haloveteran.deviantart.com/art…

scales haloveteran.deviantart.com/art…

any advice on the pics?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EMP-83 In reply to haloveteran [2014-02-12 20:01:39 +0000 UTC]

For the scales, that's why it's best not to draw each scales (plus, there's generally bigger scales on flat parts, smaller on joints). Basically, just put some dots/scales regularly, and that does the trick

That actually looks like a good start Maybe there are some mistakes with proportions (like the tail is generally the size of the body). I'm sure if you train more on that, you can perfect it

Lol this is brilliant! I love the realistic detail in the various lizards and reptiles (i also couldn't stop laughing at the exaggerated crocodile hiding under the water) its adorable

I like that you added the tips on eye placement and the neck when drawing reptiles as anthros

EMP-83 In reply to Sleyf [2014-01-25 18:51:49 +0000 UTC]

I definitely love drawing reptiles I just never post these kind of sketches cause they have no real interests

That was the aim of it, but there's soooo much to say :/ I just thought about the common mistakes I see in others works

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sleyf In reply to EMP-83 [2014-01-27 19:01:26 +0000 UTC]

I don't think I've drawn them that much myself, only dragony things I guess. Yeah real-life sketches don't do so well

That's the best thing to do because it really does help, and look at how popular it is!
