I have a question about layering and watercolor paper.
How many layers do you usually do for say, something like this character's shirt? It seems like it must be a few in order to get that coloring and the shadows. The layers also look very smooth. When I attempt to layer watercolor it tends to look rougher and the color seems to sit on top and is easily moved. I see you use Montval paper and Campap which are both rather inexpensive papers, meaning I know I don't need to spend large amounts of money on paper. If you have any advice on smooth layering I'd love to hear it.

and what is your watercolor brand? is it artist grade or student grade? did you use soft and sharp pointy round brush when painting?
and what paper did you use?

I use Holbein watercolors. I used to use Old Holland but found the mass tones a bit leathery and the paint sticky. I use a soft round brush when painting usually sizes 6 and 4. The paper I use most often is Canson XL watercolor pad. Before that I used Bristol board and 90lb student watercolor paper.

I remember you saying you enjoyed Holbein's candy colors and that to get the color saturation you wanted how you had to layer it several times. It's nice to know what you use certain brands for so I can get a different idea as I look at your paintings. It almost helps me understand certain characteristics when I see use one brand at a time such as this--->Morning Wake up or this-->Axel's Bedroom because even with reading a visual example is good before investing in watercolors.
Daniel Smith is a brand I really want to try but I get a little overwhelmed by their color choices. Thank you for the heads up on the fumes from M. Graham.

I've noticed 2 colors with urine smell so far, prussian blue and azo orange, but I think there are more.
maybe because of their blackberry honey.
and azo orange is my favorite skin color, I only use this orange for main skin tone atm

Thank you. M. Graham's pretty cheap considering other watercolor prices in America. I will keep special look out for Azo Orange because I constantly look for good skin tones. It's really interesting to known about the scents.

I use artist quality watercolors [danielsmith, mgraham, winsor&newton, holbein, but my recommendation is danielsmith] , they are easier to use/ less chalky/ than student grade watercolor, I painted 3-4 layers [base layer/ 1st shadow/ deeper shadow/ reflected light [with white gouache mixed with color]
and I've tried some expensive papers like fabriano and arches [semi-rough], they are also nice, but sometimes sharp brushstroke seems to spread a little and difficult to paint small detail, but I have no problem with hot-pressed smooth surface of these 2 brands, [they are quite ideal for cell shading anime style]
btw I have no problem painting small details on 300g montval and campap, they also have semi rough surface but their surfaces are a bit smoother than semi-rough arches and fabriano

Thank you very much for the layer advice. Layering for shadows is what I am trying to conquer most in watercolor at the moment. I never thought of mixing gouache with watercolor for a highlight.
I've once used hot pressed from Fabriano. I enjoyed the look of markers on it and how smooth it is.
One day I hope to try Campap. It's not sold regularly in America but it seems like it can be ordered online. I've used a Canson paper but not Montval, I feel I need to try it out.

if you are looking for montval, I would recommend using at least 300g, because 190g montval sucks so bad, and it curls easily.

I used sharp pointy round brush to paint small details, but you can also use sharpened colored pencil or fine line colored pen such as copic multiliner sp, and I did doodle watercolor art on sketchbook almost everyday when I was a beginner to get used to it.
