A painted study of shadow and light featuring a woman of colour sitting on a grey blanket against an indigo vignette. She holds her arm across her breasts and her legs are crossed demurely, so although she is nude, the overall effect is one of elegance rather than explicit.
I wanted the shadows to create the shape of the figure in highlights and the use of indigo hue, one of the more valuable paints, was used throughout to create the deep blacks and lighter sections of the background, including the darker shades of the subject’s skin.
