Description I absolutely HaAAaaAAAaaAaTE it when people make OCs for themselves that are alicorns. GET CREATIVE PEOPLE, MINE IS A FREAKING DEAR. And sure, there's concept art of Cadence's and Shining's kids, but . . . . most of them suck. I mostly don't like their choice of colors. Also, thanks to LunaDora for you beautiful stamp template.

Edit: Changed Nyx's  colors to cannon Nightmare Moon colors

I completely agree.
But there are SOME, note SOME alicorn oc's that actually make since.
I used to have an alicorn oc, but then I looked at the big question;
"Why?"
And it just didn't make since.
Oh well.
I went back to the drawing board and made a earth pony to match my personality :3

My own OC is a unicorn and I agree that you shouldn't make your own OC as an alicorn, because alicorns are... special.
But I have created two alicorn characters to a fanfic, but they aren't just normal ponies so... x3

That is totally acceptable, seeing that absolutely anything can happen in fanfics.

Just because an OC is an alicorn doesn't make it a Mary Sue/Gary Stu. What if that character is actually good, with a thorough bio and a unique, original personality, background, name, color scheme, etc.? Then, by definition, they aren't a Mary Sue. Don't judge a book by its cover.

I never said anything about Mary Sues. Any sort of character can be horribly perfect/victimized/over-rated. I said that people making alicorn OCs to represent themselves aren't creative. Of course in the world of fan-fics anything is possible, Nyx herself being a great example. But a person using an alicorn OC to represent themselves just does not make sense. Another alicorn has no place in Equestia, and is in my opinion lazy, explained very well in this video. Analyzing Is Magic: Alicorn OCs - YouTube

I understand that another alicorn doesn't have a place in Equestria, but in my opinion almost no OCs do, except in some kind of AU. Having another character introduced would mess it up, as many OCs are cast as heroes-which is perfectly understandable, you want someone grand to represent you. I just think that as long as the OC is unique in design, personality, and background, then they can be considered creative, whether or not they have a place in the show's canon. Also, you can have an alicorn OC that isn't technically royalty, as well, or that is the ruler of a different kingdom that doesn't affect Equestria. As long as your ideas are presented well and are, well, unique and good ideas, then you can be considered creative as well.

I understand that an OC can still be creative as an Alicorn, but it contributes nothing character, back story, or design. People need to chose between a horn, wings or neither after they create the rest of their character. Instead of just making their character an Alicorn and building around that, trying to justify their choice of choosing the superior race to represent them.

So you are saying to first create a character, give them a personality, background, etc. and then make them an alicorn for a good reason, correct? In that case, I agree. That is a good way to build an OC. I don't think it's impossible to create a thorough character that was, say, born an alicorn, but I agree that the above option is better.

I don't consider changelings alicorns so,   .

of course not they aren't ponies, that would be ridiculous

En-Seta In reply to M1dnightMuse [2014-05-21 20:41:13 +0000 UTC]

Well . . . . . changelings are essentially the pony equivalent to vampires (except they drain a pony of their love instead of their blood), so I do consider them some form of a pony.

M1dnightMuse In reply to En-Seta [2014-05-22 13:39:22 +0000 UTC]

in my opinion they don't drain but rather recieve what is given, feeding may make the prey tired of the prey intentionally feeds emotional energy but other than that there are no effects to feeding
on the matter of species, they are unrelated by the definition of species, and pylom because they don't reproduce the same way as ponies, and they belong to pylum arthropoda instead of mamillia (they fit the classification scheme of bugs, not mammals)
