Description CW: implied drugging and child abuse

It was the third night Jesper had awoken to find she had been taken into the middle of the woods again.

The first time, when she had awoken in that cardboard box with her instructions written on a note under her arm, the little quill had been too overwhelmed and confused to do anything but press herself into the back of the box and attempt to go back to sleep, hoping maybe she'd reappear back in her quarters at home. The Teacher had not been happy at all when he'd come out the next morning to find her still inside the box. Her claws shook at the memory of what came after that.

The second night she had taken her box with her, moving through the woods and between the identical trees carefully. She had eventually given up trying to discern anything in the inky darkness, and went back to sleep in her box. The Teacher was, again, not pleased. And the aftermath was just as awful as it was before.

This third night, Jesper had no box, she had merely found herself nestled in the grass and fallen leaves. Her head felt fuzzy and swimmy and her steps were clumsy, a sensation she'd woken up with the past two times she'd found herself in the forest. Her stomach also felt unsettled still, like it would feel a minute or so after the Teacher would give her that medicine he insisted she needed some nights.

Swallowing back her terror, the young quill knew she had to figure out how to get back home this time. She tried to recall the scenery from when she had been escorted back home, but everything was so much different in the darkness.

She heard something shift in the foliage beyond, and she froze. Jesper blinked into the gloom, and felt the slow, cold dread well up heavily in her chest as three points in the shadows stared back at her. She saw them blink.

A stiff, freezing wind caused the mass of darkness attached to the three pinpoints to billow slightly off to the side, looking like long fur or tendrils blowing in the breeze.

At once, the images of deelaguns she'd been made to study in the past exploded in her sluggish brain. As the dark figure shifted toward her, she thought she caught a glimpse of moonlight glinting off white claws. What appeared to be two pointed tails weaved behind, and Jesper felt herself panting with terror. Was there a yittle around here too? Two dangerous spites?

Her scream came out as a squeaky whimper as she turned and barreled through the long tufts of grass, not looking back in fear of seeing the thing(s) chasing right behind. The dark forest swam past rapidly in her still-hazy vision, and the quill couldn't distinguish shadows from figures lying in wait. Jesper couldn't trust her mind or her eyes right now, so she just kept running.

She was glad the Teacher wasn't here to see this.

She knew how he hated expressions of fear.
