The first of hopefully many commissions to come from my MASSIVE COMMISSION SALE OMG . This is for the loverly *SnowGuardian of her gorgeous character, Zak! She asked for something foresty and water-y, so I snagged a few photo refs from when I was playing in the Adirondacks with *SnowWolfMystic a few months back and then this happened <__<.
I know that rule number one is that the Doctor lies you're not supposed to experiment with things with a commission, but I tried something new and shady anyway :I. So he's smooth instead of ALL THE HAIRS-y, because I thought it would have looked off next all those rocks that are shaded too softly <__<.

Ooooh! That shading style is lovely! o: I think that works really REALLY nicely for that sleek, smooth fur effect that some critters have. I downloaded the full size (I r nosey) and I love that you can see the slight hints of fur texture that you've given. It looks great! And of course, the uber lovely usual fur texturing of yours works wonderfully for the mane and tail fuzz. Experiment success, I think! WOO. 8D
And geee you are so improving with backgrounds. I LOVE that you are trying a wide variety of subjects and are totally challenging yourself. c: The smooth rocks look nice against the loooverly textures of the water and foliage. I think the leaf-less branchy trees are my favourite! <3 I always struggle with those (where do branches even go, wat) and they look sooo lovely here. Love the colouration of the bark, too. Pretty! 8D

YES I THOUGHT SO TOO. Like, things like lions and dogs with short annoying fur I HATE DOING SHORT FUR THAT is what I like doing this with. I want to see if I can somehow meld this with some fur. Like, chest fur and tummy fur and stuff, but without making it look, like, Dolpy-style long-fur-on-plastic, because it's really jarring <__<. BUT ANYWAY LOL THANK YOU!
God how do I even backgrounds >__>. I DON'T KNOW SOMEDAY I'LL MAKE THEM LIKE YOU LOL.

Man I love your little fur details, but the lack of it really does fit very nicely in this pic. That bg is STUNNING btw, it totally looks like what I imagine the picture looks like, which is SO COOL. I... don't even know what to do with my life anymore. I like this but at the same time I'm like THERE SHOULD BE MORE FUR ;_____;. I need to figure out how to fur things like chests and bellies and elbows and stuff but make it smooth in annoying places like forearms and stuff. There's gotta be a way <__<

Really? I thought you did an excellent job at doing that in this pic! Having the chara's markings flow into the hair like you did really lends to him looks fuzzy and everything fitting in place. Just my opinion anyway. c':

Those trees and rocks and bits of moss and foliage look fanTASTIC! Wow... How on earth do you have the patience to do such things like this!?! Wow...
Also that soft shading is just beautiful! I love how soft and fuzzy it looks whilst still having that fur texture! Wow!! I think for far off full body characters shots like this, it *even* looks better than the AlltheHairs style you do! (blasphemous, I'm sorry!) XD

The trees are a brush. I just went YAY 8D and spazzed them on. AND IT WAS AWESOME.
I freakin LIKE this shadey thing. I definitely want to do it more! I'm hoping there's some way to combine it with some semblance of fur texture, because he looks a little unnatural to me right now. Like, being able to transition into, like, belly fluff and elbow fluff and chest fluff and stuff. There's gotta be a way <__<

ANYWHO, This is STUNNING, m'dear. I saw the WIP on Dumblr, and I knew this was going to be badass ever since that >8'D I LOVE the way you colored Zak's fur, it's so soft and smooth, and the background works very well with him! The colors in it compliment him, but don't overpower him. Also, those tree details make me gasm. So. Yes. :'D

First of all, this is a absolutely WONDERFUL way of shading! You really hit the nail of the head with this one! It's smooth but the fur detail of the mane and some other parts of his body contrast it and it looks amazing! You should do more of this type of shading
Look at that wonderful background! It's so detailed ;_; I wish I was there to see this scene in real life!
My only critique is that the character doesn't really stand out from the amazing bg, but maybe that's just the colors of the character so not your fault xD

I LOOOOVE shading like this! I definitely want to fool around with it more! It takes awhile of course but good things come with time, I guess!
and it's PRETTY in real life! This is the actual photo! [link] we had to cross the stream on the rocks; it's how I thought of the idea for the pose xD
And the character blending is totally partially my fault! I used his yellows to highlight the rocks, and I used the green in the stream as his shade color, so they're both about the same color, so he's really easy to lose! I just never know what's good and what's lol-this-character-looks-copied-and-pasted-here. It's such a thin line! And thank you for the protip! <3333
