I used lots of photos for reference, this helps me understand the shapes and 'plans' that animals have (imagine how all the plans were geometric, that's basically what I try to understand)

I do agree - references can really help with the understanding. Not only with details, but also with general proportions and all that.
I know that many artists break down bodies (be it of animals or humans) into geometric shapes and work out the details from there on. I personally do not use that technique - somehow, it just doesn't "apply to me". Maybe I should just give it a try once or twice, and take a photo and take a good bunch of time and break down all the things to geometric planes.

I recommend, in my view, is a better way to understand the shapes and plans.
After a while you apply it in a natural way, especially where it is shade and light! Here, this video is very good - Good Shapes - 10 Minutes To Better Painting - Episode 4
is about shapes, but it helps to understand these geomathic divisions ^-^
