Description The Type 74 was the main battle tank of the JGSDF(Japanese ground self defense force) from 1975-1990 and some are in service today alongside the JGSDF type 90. The type 74 incorporated a number of contemporary designs, including the rolled steel hull of the Leopard 1, and a British L7 105mm gun. With a low profile turret the Type 74 was comparable to other MBT of the time (M60, Leopard 1, Merkava 1) additional upgrades were given to the tank over the years including thermal sleeved barrel, infra-red imagers, computerized fire control, laser range finder and hit indictor.
due to cost ,design problems and other issues the type 74 didn't full enter service in till 1980, at which point it was generally concerted to be outdated compared to MBT of that time(Abrams, Leopard 2, T80) 893 units were produced and it was replaced by the much more powerful and high tec Type-90 during the early 90's.

This is a 1/35 Tamiya Type 74, that I was able to find at a con for $15. I haven't seen this kit around and while I don't think it's rare, its one you don't really see often. This kit was originally produced sometime in the 70's and the kit I got was the reissued "winter version" from the 90's(added runner featuring ski's, figurines, infra-red ect). You can tell that it being a Japanese tank and Tamiya being a Japanese company, they really gave this one some extra love. A pretty cool kit of an often forgotten MBT. I was pretty happy about the kits details, especially for the price/age and would highly recommend it.
Painted with enamels and weathered with art acrylics /pastels. Gear was from the bits box and scratch build. I painted it in colors to match my Stryker and am already thinking up some situations for them to be involved in.

Interesting piece---so used to seeing nothing but Nazi armor, I've come to expect little else.
Tank forces around the globe---very informative.

Yes, that's a big part of the fun, leaning new things by building, doing---that A-10 inspired a similar vehicle in my stories.

No telling what you might find as you go.

yup, a lot of my builds inspire me to come up elaborate back story's as well XD

cool!

In the case of the A-10, I noticed the shape of the wings as I was dry-fitting, and my imagination got away from me...dragons.

If you don't learn a thing or two about what you build, it's a bit of a waste---my niece took my model of the Titanic for show and tell.

thanks a ton man! adventures and combat is being thought up for this thing.

i painted it to match my Stryker, and is something i am shifting towards. i want to start painting things in certain paint schemes from now on. i.e gray scheme, green scheme, apocalyptic raider and of course crazy bat S!@$ insane German schemes.

that way ill save on paint cost and things will match up better in photos.

Sounds like a splendid plan all the way around! I can't wait to see what you dream up, any chance it will involve Mega-chicken? If Mega-chicken will co-operate that is...

thanks buddy, the figurines were stock with the kit but quite cool!

hankypanky68 In reply to enc86 [2013-05-03 03:36:55 +0000 UTC]

I would have figured that you made the tank commander from another kit? Very well done!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enc86 In reply to hankypanky68 [2013-05-03 03:40:55 +0000 UTC]

nope, both came with the kit, i was very surprised cause alot of the time this brand uses the same figurines on alot of tanks(so i have seen them all, i thought) anyways i guess they are in "winter" gear but some green/gray/sand and they look chill with masks on their faces. nothing is worse them mud and dirt in your mouth.

hankypanky68 In reply to enc86 [2013-05-03 04:09:05 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! Dirt in the mouth is never good! By the way, The Lord Humongous vehicle is requiring much detail with figurines which is kinda rare. Have painted lots of little people in my lifetime and you never forget how! Chopped off a few heads and arms in the day! Need to figure out a way to strap the figures on a platform as the front bumper? Maybe even give Lord Humongous a throwing three pronged spear? This will be the most parts ever used in a custom by the time it is done!
