Description On 20 December 1943, the German fighter pilot Franz Stigler in his Messerschmitt Bf 109 encountered the heavily damaged B-17 "Flying Fortress" of the American pilot Charles "Charlie" L. Brown. Instead of shooting down the easy target (he lacked only one more victory for the award of the Knight's Cross) Stigler decided not to attack the aircraft but to disobey orders and escort the B-17 out of the danger zone. When they reached the North Sea, flying in formation, Stigler saluted to Brown, turned away and returned to Germany. In 1990 Brown finally found Stigler and both remained close friends for the rest of their days (both died in 2008).

War brings out the worst in men, but occasionally, it brings out the best in me. This is proof of that.

An amazing story of how a German pilot disobeyed his superiors by escorting the damaged B-17 "Flying Fortress" out of the battlezone. That shows not all Germans were bad person and they had a portion of their honor - almost overshadowed by the plans of the Third Reich.

Great job by making this artwork.

Read the book and it was a fantasticΒ story with lots of insights into the war and the lives of these two men.Β  Franz Stigler first commander I believe helped shape the attitude of his men by making them refer to the shootdown of enemy planes as "Victories" instead of kills.Β  More importantly, to never shot at men in parachutes.Β  Why isn't this story being made into a movie??????Β Β Β

One of my all-time favorite stories from WW2. Sometimes the heroes weren't the ones that fought the most, but the ones who knew when to stop fighting.

Beautiful stuff mate, cheers!

It's good to see this for multiple reasons. A lot of people nowadays disregard the fact that the history of my country isn't just filled with cold blooded killers.

The Soldiers of germany were also humans. They had their own heroic stories and their own tragedies. History's written by the victor, sadly.

I knew about this story for a long time. I didn't know that both pilots found each other years later and became friends. Then both died the same year. That is really heartwarming.

A bit of military honor. Perhaps he realized killing another group of enemy combatants would change nothing...

Or that the airframe was a loss anyways and needlessly shredding the aircraft and everyone inside was a waste of ammunition and nothing more than senseless murder.

That sort of honor and restraint was rare in WWII.

No they German pilot was asked later in life why he didn’t shoot it down and he said to him it would have been no different than shooting men in a parachute

From the top, then.

From down below an enemy spotted
So hurry up, rearm and refuel
But through the bomber’s damaged airframe
See wounded men, scared to their bone

Look to the right, then look again.
And see the enemy in the eye.
No bullets fly, spared by his mercy.
Escorted out, out of harms way.

Man, i love the scenes of aerial combat
Those are so epic, but personally my fetish are the battleships, destroyers, submarines, all about the navy
But i must admit this work is fantastic....why don't you color this at once man?
