my theroy behind this is that one day a man found a penny, he picked up and as he was walking he did not notice a rock in front of him so he triped he reached out and luckly he feel against a tree. Unfortunaly he had been carrying the penny in his hand so when he fell it got pushed into the tree. Later as people walked by the saw this penny in a tree and decide that it must be some kinda 'sign' so they also pushed pennies in to the tree's trunk! (:
