Description
This month, the themes were Growth and Fractals.

When I started my research for this wallpaper, I knew that I didn't want to end up using a fractal app as I felt that would be too easy. Not to discount all of our awesome fractal artists, but I wanted to produce this effect in a less orthodox manner. Painting seemed to be a really interesting option, but when it actually came time to paint, what I had in my head just didn't work in the world of fractals.

What I ended up doing then, was to investigate geometric shapes. Using geometric imagery, I was able to then build upon the image in a way that added complexity and produced the fractal-like effect I was looking for without having the image get ultra heavy visually (memory was another thing altogether — at one point this file was 13.7GB in size — I have 16GB of RAM).

There are two geometric shapes that contribute to this piece: Some hexagons and a tonnnnn of pentagons. The pentagons are what's making up the bulk of the fractal imagery, both the spiraling solid shapes overlaid on the background and the lines that are flowing alongside the shapes. The hexagons, aside from the main one holding the sapling, are peripheral, more as an accent in the background than a main focus.

The addition of plants is a reference to May being a month known for floral expansion; "April Showers bring May Flowers". Also, plant growth follows a semi-fractal pattern with leaves and branches distributing themselves around the organism as it grows.
