"AAAHHHH! Come back! Are you afraid of me, MONSTER?!? Come back, pleeeaase!!!"

~BIOSHOCK SPIDER SPLICER costume/cosplay~

Side-note: Alright, alright, I know this isn't exactly realistic/accurate for a Splicer costume because Rapture is a city under the sea, but I couldn't help uploading this one we snapped outside because I think it's hilarious and horrifying and beautiful all at the same time. This was taken after the 3-hour-plus photo-shoot inside that abandoned building. We were sweaty and exhausted and sore--me from striking and holding strange poses and hauling the props to and from the car, and my ma from being in weird positions to photograph for so long. It was the weekend before Hallowe'en, it was getting to be darker, later evening time, and the folks that live across the road were definitely freaked the hell out when they saw a bloody gal in a tattered dress and only one shoe wandering around out there in a rabbit mask with a bunch of suitcases...

I've missed dressing up as something terrifying for Hallowe'en, but wanted to keep my video game character tradition alive, so this year I transformed myself into a glorious Spider Splicer from the legendary video game BioShock. This game has been an obsession of mine ever since I was a kid (and way too young, at that), when I sat on my dear older brother's desk in his room late at night with all the lights off and watched him delve into the underwater city of Rapture. It was one of the many video games I watched him play before picking up a controller myself and getting addicted to gaming. There's really no feeling like being in Rapture, and no other video game has ever scared and intrigued me more. So, so, *SO* grateful to say that the legend himself, Ken Levine saw a handful of these on Twitter and retweeted/quoted my post. ^_~

~Costume/Cosplay by yours truly.

ATTIRE:
*Rabbit Masquerade Mask: Isn't it just MARVELOUS?! Cut from flexible flooring material, formed using heat from a hairdryer and clips. Designs painted with metallic silver acrylic paint from craft store (bottle with fine tip for tedious detailing), splashed with blood. Strap is elastic.
*50s Dress: Heh, this is pretty much the only time you'll get this tomboy to wear a dress. Got lucky with this one; my dad collects vintage gems and had this on hand, as strange as that is... One could easily be acquired from any thrift shoppe. Also, this was a sleeveless dress originally--I cut off those puffy white sleeves from another blouse and sewed them on.
*Pantyhose: God I hate these things. Drugstore.
*Shoe(s): Thrift Shoppe.
*Gauze Wrappings: Ace bandages. Secured with metal toothed clips and safety pins.
PROPS:
*Spider Splicer Hooks: These are "hay hooks" or "bale hooks" used for hooking, hauling, and loading bales of hay for horses, cows, etc. I just so happen to have a steed, so these were easy to come by. One was bright red, so I painted it with some green camouflage spray paint, then some gold, then some brown for that rusty, weathered look.
*Vintage Suitcases, Hat Box, Aftershave Bottle, Lingerie, Velvet Coat: Again, I got lucky. These things are easy to come by when your dad is an avid collector of weird retro things.
MAKE-UP:
*Blood: From my enemies. ...just kidding. This fake blood was picked up from my nearest costume/cosmetic shoppe. It's Ben Nye's "Stage Blood", has been used for plays and movies due to it's realistic quality, has a zesty mint scent, and can actually be put in the mouth, but treated as a mouthwash, not swallowed.
*Scars: Applied by drawing on with white make-up pencil, then covered in Ben Nye's Rigid Collodion Scarring Liquid (top-notch quality product, definitely recommend), then brushed with a pink lipstick/lipgloss to add that fresh effect. Scarring Liquid can be removed with coconut oil or just by soaking the scar with warm soapy water and gently peeling it off.
*Lipstick: The reddest I could find. Drugstore.
*Eyeliner, Mascara: Drugstore.
[all was pretty much removed by showering, but I used a little Ponds cold cream and coconut oil to finish taking all the make-up and such off]

Enjoy these photos from an epic photo-shoot I did just before Hallowe'en. Shout-out to dear brother for crafting this gorgeous bloody rabbit mask and my badass mother for coming out to this killer location with me and snapping these wonderful pictures of me acting psychotic...
