James was in a foul mood, he was scheduled on goods work all morning, and was keen to voice his annoyance at such an arrangement.

“It’s not fair!”

“...”

“AHEM!”

“Oh sorry James! Were you talking to me?”

“Yes Jinty, I'm talking to you! You and I are the only ones here!”

“Well that’s not true James, there’s lots of people here, I mean there’s our crews, there’s the shunter…”

“Um, Okay.”

“...there’s the workmen, the guard, and of course there’s Pug and Rosie…”

“Alright, um…that’s enough.”

“…and then of course there’s the trucks, although I don’t know why you would ask them anything…”

“Alright Shut Up!”

“And of course we can’t forget about those pesky railfans, but they're probably too busy for you to talk to…”

“SHUT UP!!!”

“...but anyways, what did you want to talk about James?”

“...sigh! It’s not fair Jinty, a splendid red engine like me should be on the express, not wasting my time on this degrading work, it’s disgusting.” James paused, patiently waiting for Jinty to reply with one of his classic witty remarks, but to his surprise, the tank engine only responded with a dead stare.

“Don’t you have anything to say Jinty?”

“Like what? Come on James, we’ve done this same old song and dance hundreds of times.”

“Song and dance? Wh-what do you mean?”

“Oh you know…You get a job you don’t like, you whine and complain to me…”
“Wha-HEY!”

“...or Rosie or Pug, we make some witty comment at your expense, normally about bootlaces or something…”

“Why You Little…”

“...and you end up even more pissed off, much to our delight.”

“Now you listen here…”

“Don’t get me wrong James it’s fun and all, but once you’ve done it so many times it gets a bit boring.” Before James could reply the guard blew his whistle and he had to depart.

“Well looks like we won’t get to do it after all, oh well, maybe next time.” James said nothing as he huffed out of the yard, thinking instead about what he’d say to Jinty during their next “Song and dance”.
