aww Light's being sweet and feeding L
the beautiful scenery in Light's school was such a contrast to the grim atmosphere they usually reside in. it was like a breath of fresh air, it oddly made me wish the gestures of friendship they gave each other were genuine

Thank you so much for the comment! :3
Yes, I agree. Re-watching the anime, I was so depressed at episode 25 that I decided to draw something really fluffy to brighten my spirits. While drawing this, I had this scenario in mind:
Light, exhausted and tired of staying confined to the building and working late nights for days after days, decides to ask L if he could go outside for a breath of fresh air. Naturally, L declines but after some coaxing from the team, Watari and Light himself, he decides to comply. They walk to a nearby park with L rambling about rising percentages of Light being Kira and Light glaring at the detective and sighing at the odd stares directed towards their chained hands by others. They almost have a full-blown argument as usual about Kira which finally leads to them giving each other the 'silent-treatment'.
With passing time, the silence becomes more companionable and out of blue L asks, "Have you ever had a real friend, Light?" The question renders him speechless for a moment because not only did he ever expect such a question from him but also because the wheels in his mind are turning at a tremendous rate to calculate if answering the question would affect his 'Kira percentage'. Not that he is Kira, but he doesn't want to say anything that would make L suspect him more. If only L could understand how it feels being the prime suspect of a case in which he had absolutely no part. As if sensing his thoughts, L adds that his question has nothing to do with Kira. And though Light thinks he shouldn't believe him, he ultimately decides to answer genuinely for once. "No". It's a simple answer and Light doesn't elaborate anymore. Though Light is a popular student and has hundreds of people who he calls 'friends'; in truth, there has been no one who he can actually relate to or consider a true friend or equal. Except L, maybe. No, there were no 'maybe's about it. L has been the only person with whom Light relates on an intellectual level - the only person who has ever sparked an interest in him. They sit there in companionable silence once more and Light muses a little about what could have been had they met under different circumstances. Deciding it's wishful thinking, he goes on to ask L about some philosophical questions, which he knows both him and L would enjoy discussing about.
After a few hours of philosophical debates, tennis matches and silent appreciation of their affinity for each other, the genii are visibly more cheerful than they were at the start of the day. The detective's craving for something sweet leads them to an ice-cream stand. Before Light can pay and retreat back to their seat, L has already devoured his chocolate ice-cream; bits and pieces of the dessert still stuck around his lips. Whether it’s for the adorable expression L has on his face or for Light's current generous mood - he hopes it’s the latter - he holds out his share of the dessert for the panda-eyed detective. As he stretches his hand out to convey that he may have his ice-cream, Light says "You know L, in a way, you're my first friend too." L doesn’t correct him for using his real name this time, instead his lips upturn ever so slightly in a genuine smile as he replies, "Thank you, Light." Yes - they both think – they could certainly get used to more of this.
(Apologies for the rant )

oh no don't apologize! that was a wonderful backstory, made me go "aww"
i can see Light having fake friends rather than real from how he distances himself from people, possibly his own family too (though he seemed to care for Sayu)

Death Note giving me dem feels i love it
yep that was me! Breaking Benjamin has that dark melancholy mood to it that Death Note has, its lyrics can be connected with many things and it's rock which is used in the show
most songs fit for LxLight/LightxL (without you, give me a sign, anthem of the angels, into the nothing, so cold, away, you fight me, evil angel, angels fall) but others can be taken without romance (i will not bow, blow me away, dear agony, hopeless, crawl, failure, what lies beneath, breath, until the end) and 'better days' their happiest one
out of curiosity do you prefer LxLight or LightxL? or do you like both?
now I'm the one rambling

I like both because no matter who's "topping" I love the pairing however I do see LightxL a bit more easily because i also see L as not having much social experience, really it's all about interpretations and I enjoy everyone's different ones
I like all the characters a lot so it's hard to choose xD L is actually my most loved fictional character in general but Light Mikami Mello Matt and the whole of task force I think are all interesting characters they made me want to know more about thier lives and stories
well besides the one a rambled about I actually like LxMatsuda as well though it's less likely I think it would be cute, Matsuda is left out from things because he's seen as clumsy and foolish I felt bad for him because he seems to radiate innocence I think that innocence would be good for L though both of them are technically cast out because of thier quirks and yeah that's my only two pairings really. I don't really mind who's with who, though I can NEVER see Misa being with Light (sorry MisaxD) and some are just bizarre to think about

Heheh yeah It's hard to imagine L and Light having that connection with anyone else
Well most common answer is Misa while she is annoying I think she's a funny kind of annoying and likable in her own way
but out of all characters maybe what I found most annoying was when Near indirectly called L a loser for not winning against Kira, it was just kind of bratty, nothing against Near of course! I think he's a fine character though I really like when people make Near and Mello have a closer relationship with L almost brotherly it makes for some interesting scenes in my head, just my taste though

The first time I watched Death Note, I found Misa extremely annoying but on the second watch, I didn't dislike her all that much. I agree about Near; I was really annoyed when he indirectly called L a loser... I also didn't find Near very interesting because he felt like a L copycat. But then after reading a bunch of fanfics about him and the Wammy's house, I grew to like him a bit. Did you like the rest of the episodes after L's death and the ending?

Oh yes I liked the episodes after L's death just fine again Mello and Matt were interesting I wanted to know more about them but then BAM! the show says nope time for character death hope you didn't get attached to those characters cause you won't be needing em, anyway I like how some time passed and we got to see how the task force changed and i totally think Light missed L from these scenes i think I'm the only one who noticed these scenes too

One of the main reasons I got hooked to the show was because of the dynamics and brilliant mind chess between L and Light and therefore the episodes following L's death didn't feel that interesting... though I did like them. I agree with that... all the coolest characters died. I kind of felt that the ending was lackluster; I couldn't bring myself to believe that Kira would fall for a simple switcheroo trick when we could all see it coming. I of course didn't want Light to win, but I wished he was defeated in a grander way than this one. I was never on Light's side but I did feel sorry for him in the last episode when he was running down the street reminiscing old times. The fact that Light saw L's spirit just before he died was a very nice touch... it got me crying a bit.
As for Light missing L... I noticed that too. In episode 26, Light hallucinated that L was sitting there before he turned to face Light and said something with a half-smile which wasn't revealed to the audience. Light looked really hollow and lost in thought since that and the shot was cut to Light and Misa having a date where Light was still having the same expression on his face. He had a keen sense of admiration and respect for L even after his death and he said that N didn't deserve to wear L's mask because he was nowhere near L's level and that L would have figured out exactly what Light had planned. And out of all the people Light could have conjured up right before his death, it was L and his eyes were an odd mixture of understanding, pain and regret? Also, an interesting thing I noticed is that during all the times he hallucinated L, L's eyes were not shown once... if his mind conjured up the image, does that symbolize that Light couldn't bring himself to look into L's eyes out of a slight sense of regret? Even if he didn't regret killing him, he was clearly missing him. After all, he was the only person who shared his level of intelligence and the only one who he could relate with in a way. Also, he was missing the challenge.

maybe the reason it seemed boring after episode 25 was to feel what Light was feeling
Light kinda lost his touch for some reason maybe a plot device
all those little scenes were so interesting and subtle
WOAH! i didn't notice/think about the eyes not being shown that makes so much sense
oh and i didn't respond before about BB i know little to nothing about him because i only watched the anime, not the novel, not the movies, and not the drama
the first time a saw him i thought he was a evil killer version of L and i was like "wat? people keep comparing him to jeff and killer enough already man"
but yeah now all i know is he like made himself look like L cause he's crazy and likes him or something

(so sorry i didn't reply sooner! here it is if still interested)
L was startled awake by the sound of glass shattering. still drowsy from sleep he looked around before getting out of his bed to investigate the noise. He slowly approached his door and opened it cautiously. He heard the voices of two men whispering. He couldn't make out what they were saying from his position upstairs but fear suddenly enveloped him. Strange people were here and he didn't know what to do about it.
Nevertheless L gathered what little courage he had left and curiosity began to win over his fear. More awake now, he silently walked down the stairs to attempt to pick up on their conversation, but any bravery that he had quickly disappeared at what he saw next.
There were two men, clearly intent on theft - one was stealing all of the most valuable things he could find and the other was holding a bloody knife standing over L’s mother who had a wound over her heart and was clearly not breathing.
She had been close to a phone about to call the police but she was too late.
L felt tears rolling down his cheeks as he stood frozen in fear. The burglar with the knife turned to look at L it made the child tremble more but at that moment when L looked right into those paralyzing eyes he felt he’d faced his worst fears and i sense of that bravery sparked within him. The thief then glanced at the other man.
“Should I kill the kid?” He asked, the other criminal looked at L too.
“No leave him - he can’t do a thing to us” the thieves started to leave the house but not before setting the home L knew to flames with a lit candle.
L was still shaking but the fire sent L into a panicked realization he swiftly approached his deceased mother.
“Mom…?” He sobbed when he got no response. L dropped down onto his knees and gave her a final hug, not caring about the heat around him in that moment. He wished so badly that she would hug him back. after a bit L let go of his mother “I’m sorry” he whispered and looked around wildly searching for an escape, he saw a window the boy grabbed it and with all his might opened it and jumped out. L looked back at his home only crying harder, scared and hurt he hated that all he could do was cry he wished that he could’ve done something to save her, anything. It was raining outside as though the sky was weeping with L on the day that would change the boy’s life.
L gradually slowed his pace until he came to a stop. He looked around - home was nowhere to be seen. he was on a sidewalk in an unfamiliar place.
L didn't know where to go from here - he was lost. The rain and chilly air made him feel very cold but not as cold as his heart was starting to feel. The blood on his shirt from his mother would not wash away easily like how the memory of what happened could never disappear. L wished that what had happened had all just been a bad dream and that he would wake up and see his mother again. He would run into her arms telling about a nightmare and she would comfort him stroking his hair whispering soothing words but that possibility was becoming weaker and weaker as reality set in. L broke out of his thoughts when he realized that he no longer felt rain. he looked up and saw a man in his forties, holding an umbrella.
L gasped and backed away afraid that this man would do something to him. the man smiled gently and held up his free hand in a sign of peace.
“Don't worry I'm not going to hurt you” he spoke gently. at that L didn't run away but he was still hesitant. he looked at the man closely with his dark eyes as though he was having an inner battle - trust this gentleman or not? The man spoke again “my name is Quillsh Wammy I couldn't help but notice that you’re all alone - where are your parents?”
L didn't answer as tears silently fell from his eyes.
“Are they gone?” asked, a sad frown appearing on his face. L finally decided to have a little trust in this stranger and nodded slowly.
“I see…” Quillsh said solemnly then reached out his hand offering it to the boy.
“I can take care of you” L looked into Quillsh’s eyes searching for anything to suggest that the man was lying but he saw nothing but honesty and kindness. L made up his mind at that moment. He took Quillsh’s offered hand. The man smiled then started leading L to his car.
L was quiet for the entire ride looking down while nibbling his thumb. Quillsh glanced at the bloodstain on L’s shirt, and worried about what kind of trauma the boy had suffered to get him so shaken up but he didn't ask, respecting that the child wouldn't want that brought up.
“I don't believe I got your name” he said instead. L lowered his thumb
“…” he said softly still looking down.
He’d stopped crying by now but his nose was runny. Quillsh got out a handkerchief from his pocket and gave it to L.
“Here blow your nose with this” he said kindly.
L blew his nose. L’s eyes were red from crying and he overall looked miserable, drawing an empathetic look from Quillsh, who then focused his attention on driving again. They had arrived at their destination.
“We’re here” Quilsh announced. L looked up to see an orphanage. Quilsh got out of the car and opened the car door for L, who climbed out slowly, staring at the orphanage with interest. Quilsh took hold of L’s hand tenderly.
“this is Wammy’s house. from now on till you grow up this will be your new home” he said.
Many things happened in the 14 years L spent in Wammy’s house. L’s grief lessoned over time at least on the outside. He began to eat practically nothing but sweets and fruits and barely slept, hiding his emotions away more and more. His mother used to tell him that eating too many sweets was bad but he didn't see the point in listening to his mother's advice when she was gone.
As he aged his hair became longer and messier and his skin was pale from being inside so much. he became so thin that he was bony from lack of proper nutrition. Dark circles appeared under his eyes from absence of sleep.
He had developed a hate for crime because of his past and he gained a desire to rid the world of crime for as long as he lived, wanting to make sure the innocent didn't suffer like he did.
L was educated in a private school in the orphanage. He was originally supposed to start at preschool level at age four, but Quillsh saw the natural genius in L and let him skip a few grades.
L graduated at 14 and immediately started to work at becoming a detective and solved his first cases one coincidentally involved the very two burglars who had murdered his mother. It turned out they had murdered others too. L was so glad when he put them behind bars - he still remembered when they thought he couldn't do a thing to them - oh the irony…
Ever since L had turned 7 he had started crouching instead of sitting normally it helped him think and he actually felt more comfortable sitting that way (though most people would disagree).
when others asked why he did not sit in a normal fashion, he would simply say:
“I sit this way because it raises my deductive ability by 40%”
L’s way of sitting also resulted in the detective having a hunched posture which made him look wary and speculative
Quillsh had shown concern for L’s back but L assured him he was fine so Whammy hesitantly left it at that.
Over time, L had moved on from his mother’s death but he still found himself missing her from time to time.. Quillsh proved himself to be a great fatherly figure to L. He’d comforted L and took care of him and helped him when he was in need. Quillsh loved L as if he were his own son and L felt truly grateful to him, though his lack in people skills prevented him from voicing it.

Sorry, I was really busy so I couldn't reply earlier.
This was really well-thought out and interesting to read. I have similar theories about L's childhood. There's a particular quote from Another Note (if I remember correctly) that breaks my heart a little every time I read it: "The century's greatest detective, advertised as solving every case imaginable. How great his burden must be, how much pain must he go through every single moment: past, present, and future... A burden so great it would leave you hunched over. A bitter taste in your mouth that would leave you longing for sweets."
