Description

A new SCP-inspired monster, this one using the prompt "Incubus/Succubus." Another long description for this one.

This particular anomaly was first discovered on-site at a containment facility, possibly having followed an agent or staff member from another location, although it is currently unclear when or where this may have occurred. Interestingly - and perhaps worryingly - it appears to remain of its own accord.

While it has thus far stayed within the bounds of the facility, it has shown itself capable of moving through solid walls and objects if it so chooses (including living creatures). A material or individual it passes through will experience a minor electromagnetic surge; in humans, this may cause sudden feelings of anxiety, dizziness, or headaches, which can last from a few seconds to a few minutes. Additionally, this anomaly is only visible in reflected or indirect light, such as mirrors, moonlight, or diffused ambient light. When viewed on film or digital cameras, however, it appears as a black shadow. When observed in a room devoid of all visible light, individuals report still being able to “see” the anomaly, describing it as “blacker than black,” although any additional features are inconsistent - some have described humanoids, others have described forms with many limbs or wings, while others have described collections of eyes, mouths, or other disjoined body parts. Observing it in such pitch dark conditions has since been discouraged for staff, after the discovery that individuals who do so will eventually suffer frequent anxiety attacks and chronic hallucinations, most often in the form of peripheral black shadows.

This anomaly has shown itself to be quite sentient, and will willingly communicate with individuals upon request. It will only speak with one individual at a time - any additional observers will be unable to hear it unless it directly engages in conversation with them. Likewise, it is not detected via audio devices, meaning that any exchange with it must be hand-recorded by the person it is speaking with. In a given conversation, it has been noted to utilize voices and languages that are familiar to the individual, with some reporting that its face may appear to take on similarly recognizable features. However, these changes have only ever been observed by its current conversation partner, and are specific to the individual; once conversation has ended, these changes will no longer be perceived. It has been suggested that it is in fact using some form of telepathy during communication, which may explain its limited reception, as well as its awareness - and projection - of voices or faces that a given human is familiar with.

Despite its willingness to communicate, however, staff are advised to avoid engaging it in direct conversation if possible, and in the event of necessity, for no longer than three minutes at a time. This is due to the effect it has on the humans it speaks with. Those who continue to actively converse with this anomaly will experience a gradual change in brainwave activity, transitioning from typical beta waves into theta waves - in other words, similar to sleep. However, the individual will remain awake, and instead begin to experience an extremely vivid dream-like state. These “waking dreams” are often of an erotic, violent, or otherwise primal nature. This anomaly appears to have a similar effect on the dreams of humans in a natural sleep state, similarly engaging in conversation with a sleeping individual, inducing a form of somniloquy. Those who are awake when this dream state is induced are more likely to injure themselves or others during the event, as they are unable to tell the difference between their dream and reality for the duration, which can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Afterwards, regardless of duration, sufferers report feeling exhausted and “drained,” often exhibiting high temperatures and heart rates, along with lingering feelings of anxiety or aggression. Difficulties with focus and coordination have also been reported. Repeated exposure to the effects of this anomaly have been linked to chronic neurological ailments such as narcolepsy and hallucinations.

Following testing and observation, it was found that in a percentage of cases involving biological females, additional symptoms would eventually manifest. Following multiple exposures to the anomaly, these individuals began to exhibit signs of pregnancy. However, while they showed all the typical characteristics of a normal pregnancy - including the sensation of an active, healthy fetus - tests have shown there to be no offspring present. Instead, swelling is primarily caused by a buildup of blood, amniotic fluid, and cerebrospinal fluid, with traces of human stem cells and an unidentified dark liquid. In all cases, no infant has yet been produced. Females who experience these symptoms will continue to suffer frequent night terrors throughout this pseudocyesis, with postnatal individuals exhibiting a sudden drop in REM activity, leading to cognitive difficulties.

Due to the difficulties in containing this anomaly and the risk it poses to personnel, frequent psychiatric evaluation is mandatory, along with regular staff rotation. Research into effective protection and containment measures is considered a priority.

Note: Attempts have been made to ascertain the anomaly’s purpose, with interviews focused on why it appeared, and why it remains. Its responses to such questions are frequently vague or cryptic, but most commonly, it will give a variation of the answer: “Un-flesh within flesh, the inception of thought in the hollow of dreams. We are formless until you shape us within yourselves, and in this place we may witness the birth of the Brainchildren of these most fearful of men.”
