Description
(After a long wait, it's time for a new Subject! The prompt used for this creature was "Ghost.")
Subject: UA-XX56
First identified in Poland, this anomaly was eventually contained near the Austrian border of Liechtenstein. It is currently unclear if this particular instance is the only one of its kind, or if there are in fact multiple instances still present outside of containment. Since it's relocation, it has made multiple attempts to breach containment, with successful breaches on at least -- occasions, requiring the deployment of unit R-9 for retrieval. All personnel are advised to exercise caution during research.
Containment of this anomaly consists of a circular chamber with a diameter of 5 meters, and a height of 3.5 meters. The interior of this chamber is to be lined entirely in lead-backed mirror glass, with a single aperture measuring 1 x .75 meters inlaid with a lead-oxide one-way mirror for observational purposes. The door to this chamber is set with a magnetic hydraulic lock, requiring a physical key - copies of which are to be kept by the lead researcher, site director, and the site’s B-unit lead. This door is connected to the facility by an adjoining chamber; both this and the observational chamber must additionally be lined in lead sheeting. Any entry into UA-XX56’s chamber, whether for testing or maintenance, must be approved by the site director. Following breach incident --, no cameras or other electronic devices are allowed within the chamber unless they have fully self-contained circuitry. Research into more effective containment methods is ongoing.
Note: Per Dr. Fowler’s proposal, esoteric avenues of containment are being explored; the application of substances such as salt and vervain have shown promise in eliciting an aversive response in the entity.
This anomaly consists primarily of a central entity composed of an unknown, semi-solid matter. This main body appears black in color, and is of a configuration that does not resemble any known organism. No eyes or mouth have been identified in what is presumed to be its head, and it possesses a number of long, thin appendages that loosely resemble humanoid arms and hands. It is notably aggressive in this state, engaging in stalking behavior and increased hostility. However, it is most easily observed and contained while this state is maintained. Should the anomaly ever appear at less than 75-percent visibility, site management and security must be notified, and unit R-9 personnel may be requested to perform a precautionary sweep of the facility.
While EMF-emitting devices can occasionally be used to lure or temporarily maintain the attention of the anomaly, it is most attracted to the electrical fields generated by living organisms. When in an active predatory state - with it's visibility at 20-percent or higher - it will opportunistically prey on any organism it comes across. If it is in a passive predatory state, it will instead be more selective in choosing its prey, often observing and stalking the intended victim for a period of up to seven days before striking. It typically attacks the spinal column and brainstem of its prey using the sharp ends of its appendages, inducing mass activation of neurons throughout the body, resulting in seizure. Brain-death in the individual may occur anywhere between approximately five and twenty seconds following onset. Once the individual is deceased, the anomaly will retract its appendages, rapidly moving them about itself in a manner that has been described as “weaving.” The visibility of the core entity will observably decrease as this occurs. It should be noted that the anomaly will at times engage in this series of behaviors when no living organisms are physically present, but with the same results achieved.
In addition to appearing less visible to both the human eye and standard cameras, the anomaly will display an ability to phase through most materials at a rate directly correlating to its degree of occlusion. It is theorized that in addition to reducing its physical visibility, it reduces its physical presence. The exact mechanism, however, is currently unknown.
In a note by Dr. Fowler, he suggests, “In the old days, we would hunt the beasts in the wilderness and wear their skins. Nowadays, we still do. But some of these animals are no longer hunted for food, but merely for the protection - or aesthetic - that their skin provides. A fur coat will shelter you from the cold. Leather boots will protect your feet. This entity appears to have a similar use for the materials that we provide, as living, sentient beings. What it harvests, however, is not a part of us that we tend to think about, save the religious or the philosophical. We cannot see it because it is a part of us that we rarely see, ourselves. But it will use these parts of us for protection, to traverse places that it might not otherwise go. It will wear us like any other pair of boots. And like any boots, they inevitably get worn away, and require replacements.”
