Description Ultraman: Towards the Future (1990) was my very first exposure to the Ultraman legacy, watching it on Sunday mornings on my local KCOP, channel 13, and what a fine introduction it was!

While I'd love to gush about it in further detail, a recent video review by ZaGorudan encapsulates a lot of what I love about this underrated kaiju series. PLEASE CHECK IT OUT RIGHT HERE!

Towards the Future is often criticized for its monsters, with the few Godzilla and tokusatsu fans who've watched the series saying how grotesque and horrifying they are even by Japanese giant monster movie standards. I, however, honestly enjoy how grotesque and horrifying they are, combing the biopunk aesthetic of late 1980s Japan creature design, the virgining bulky creature designs of incoming 1990s tokusatsu (Heisei Godzilla, Jetman, and others), and the grunginess of Australian cult films, even incorporating the country's culture and wildlife into the monsters' backgrounds.

Of the various Towards the Future kaiju, however, there's a couple who can be considered more traditional and not-too-ugly in execution, with today's particular subject even being a sympathetic victim of circumstance, Gigasaurus from episode 2, "The Hibernator".

Re-Posted from the Ultraman Wiki:

An ancient being living in stasis for millions of years, Gigasaurus was frozen under the ice of the arctic until the malevolent Gudis virus began to warm up the arctic (although humans were already on that terrible task beforehand) and Gigasaurus was soon discovered by UMA, an international paramilitary and research group who deal with supernatural threats against humankind.

One day, the dinosaur's icy prison began to slowly melt and his cells, under Gudis' influence, began to reproduce at a bizarre rate, enlarging Gigasaurus to an unnatural mutant size. Soon, Gigasaurus woke up and broke out of the storage facility that he was being held at under government supervision. UMA sent its aerial fighter jets after the cold-powered dinosaur as he was rampaged through the city and soon into electrical transformers.

Gigasaurus's freezing breath prevented UMA's fighters from getting closer. That night, while Gigasaurus was sleeping, having been eased by the cooling comfort of the evening sky, plans were being thought up to destroy the mutated dinosaur for good, though, ultimately, none were implemented.

The following morning, as Gigasaurus was heading for a local oil refinery, Stanley Haggard, a human agent of the villainous Gudis, sabotaged the facility with plastic explosives to further enrage the already frightened prehistoric animal.

Jack Shindo, human alter ego and host to Ultraman Great, transforms to prevent Gigasaurus from destroying the entire refinery, which could take out the whole cost if ignited. The two giants clash against one another and, before long, Ultraman Great manages to use his Magnum Shoot to reflect Gigasaurus' own freezing mist against him, sending the beast into a deep sleep.

After a moment of respectful silence for the unfortunate dinosaur, Ultraman Great finally destroys Gigasaurus with his Burning Plasma before flying off.
