Hmm... First off, you have to be willing to practice. In order to be able to hit the right note, you have to hear it in your mind first, and that comes with time. Piano and/or ear training can help also, but are not required.

Start your practice session with long tones. Use them to build the quality of your tone on every note in your range, and also do them with varying dynamics. It may seem boring, but it's so helpful! Even five to ten minutes a day works wonders.

Be mindful when you practice. Don't just sit/stand there messing around waiting for time to go by, or just repeating everything over and over again. Pay attention to how you play - what do your lips feel like, how are you tonguing? If you pay attention to what you're doing, it becomes easier to identify why something doesnt sound sound right, and you can consciously change to correct it.

other than that, it's hard to give you advice, since there's so much advice I could give. Is there anything specific you want advice for?

Hi @egeusz. Such an amazing work. So glad to see another fellow horn player here. I am giving a senior recital at my university and I want to ask for your permission to use your work on my poster and maybe on some invitation cards. Please let me know what name to use as the credit.
Thanks,
Ariyo

HAHA! The truth this bears!
Can an instrument have only 3 (technically four) keys, yet be so complex?
Indeed, it is a feat of measure.
I love my instrument.

pfft well before i used to play it, i used to think the amount of tubing was as exagerrated as this. xD i know this comment is on an old drawing, but i love this too much. ^^

Hahaha. Yeah. Its was scary the first time I picked one up.
And there are so many places condensation can collect. I could never completely empty it!

That's awesome. I wish I could draw my horn like it ACTUALLY looks, not to mention draw things like I imagine them.

Thanks!
Its mostly practice. I still have much improving to do!
You can take beautiful pictures and that's also a skill that is very exceptional! A lot harder than it looks. Don't discredit your self. Just keep making art and you will always get better!

That is like? Contra-Sub-Contra Double-Triple horn? 6 horns ranging from Sub-Contra to upper range Descant horn, that would be so cool!!! Tho might be kinda heavy to carry, or to play... But still, so cool!!!

entroz In reply to SinisterGehe [2011-03-03 05:24:29 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha Thanks! And a piccolo trumpet crammed in there somewhere!
This is how the horn looked when I first picked it up in 6th grade. Sooo intimidating. Still is kinda.

After I learned all of my horns curves and things... And the places of all of it's ramovable parts it was so scary anymore.
And my horn is a mystery sometimes, even if I would remove each tuning pipe and other part and empty them out of water, it still has some water behind some part and it wont go away no matter how much your turn the horn, and sometimes I can just play for an hour without any need to empty the horn...
Rather odd in my opinion. Seeing that my older horn filled up like a bucket after first blow.

Hahaha true that! My first horn in middle school was a single and it, hardly filled at all and then when I got a double it filled all the time! Had to dump it in 2 bar rests and stuff!
Once my mellophone(marching french horn) got a penny wedged down the bell once. Took me a year to figure out why it was harder to blow through than than before. Once before a show I decided to give it a quick bath and the penny must have turned sideways and covered the pipe completely and blocked all the air. My horn instructor ran a snake through it and found the penny. It was most hilarious!

Thanks Much! Greatly appreciated!
Sure, what is amazing about french horn pipes? besides they fact that a they are over 12 feet long!!!

Arnumdrusk In reply to entroz [2009-09-05 19:04:35 +0000 UTC]

haha, well if you take the tuning slide out and put an earphone playing music (like connected to an ipod or something), it'll turn the french horn into an amplifier of sorts

I had to really concentrate to keep this one clean. It took a lot of effort on my part as I generally like to draw messy.
