Description Trying out some compositing ideas for planets in the sky. I know the image is a little big...but I didn't want to lose some of the details in the terragen render. Sorry about the large size...

Terragen render.
Rendersize: 6000x4500
Rendertime: 9 hours
Terrain: 2049x2049 world machine terrain.

Large planet: courtesy of ~meta474 obtained through *inner-space
Small planet: courtesy of Yves...although I forget where I downloaded it from...

Planets were composited in photoshop.

Enjoy!

Very nice, my only suggestion is blending the atmosphere of the lil planet a little better into the back ground..but it looks good good work!

I'm not normally a fan of pointy terrain, for some reason it just bugs me. But you seem to have a used it very well. The surface map is awsome, I can't imagine trying to get all those layers like that. Great work. I really dont' have a lot to critique as. I really like the textures down at the bottom where it looks all cracked and worn, was that photoshop or actually terragin?
The atmosphere works with the terrain very well, it has the "dusty" kind of feeling like it would in a place like that with the sun setting. The planets complete the picture. Great job!!

environaut In reply to fish0o [2005-07-27 04:41:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for such a detailed comment! Yes, this was all done in terragen...I used overlays for the cracked stone effect. The only photoshop work was for the planets...well, and resizing/sharpening/etc. Thanks again!

javajones [2005-07-26 21:58:45 +0000 UTC]

Nice texturing. Especially nice blending on the overlay(s). The 2D clouds and overly thick/glowing atmospheres on the planets (especially the smaller one) detract slightly, and the strata might be better if broken up a bit more, but this is really an excellent image overall and these are small issues.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

environaut In reply to javajones [2005-07-27 03:20:24 +0000 UTC]

Hey Oshyan! Thanks for the comment and the tips...what would you suggest to replace the 2D clouds here? I could probably adjust the planets' atmo's with an erase brush at a lower opacity to fix that. Anyway, I really appreciate your input here...and thanks for the compliment!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

javajones In reply to environaut [2005-08-03 04:47:52 +0000 UTC]

Well, 3D clouds (in Terragen) could be a start. But if you don't like those, the only alternative would be post processing a photo in. As for the planet's atmospheres, as others have suggested here you could make your own planets and then you'll have full control of things like that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

environaut In reply to javajones [2005-08-05 20:55:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...I haven't found good enough settings for 3D clouds yet (mainly because I haven't experimented enough yet...except for overcast skies...I love 3D clouds for overcast skies ). But yeah...I have yet to try post-processing in cloud photos yet...which is a very good idea. I mean, LutzB seems to be one of the experts on that...his stuff just looks amazing. Yeah, I'm still learning how to make better planets too...I was just playing with the composition of the piece here...although I definitely agree I could have fixed that smaller planet's atmo. Thanks again for the tips! I sure do appreciate it.

chaos-syndrome [2005-07-26 19:20:39 +0000 UTC]

Very nice composition, the terrain is awesome... as for the planets, I'd suggest making the atmosphere halos smaller, and add some large-scale features to the top-right one, craters/continents or something like that - it's a bit uniform at the moment.

Thanks, Erin! Actually the strata are rather easy to do...just have to set the .bmp overlay file, sdjust some height and slope parameters...and voila! Strata! I really appreciate the too!

Don’t apologize for a good thing man, you posting a big version is a good thing, very good.
More than once people don’t even care if you are able to see the details, and even strap a huge watermark across the entire piece, which in many cases its not needed cause the piece is crappy anyway
Not your case though, the texturing and strata on this piece is superb!! The attention to detail is wonderful, the atmosphere also is first rate, congratulations. I only find one little detail that bothers me, the atmosphere on the left planet seems too thick, you should really reduce that cause affects the overall realism of the piece.
Cheers 

Thank you very much for the detailed comment and suggestion! Yeah...now that I look at it more I agree about the smaller planet having too thick of an atmo...I'll try to fix that later.

I'm glad you appreciate the details and being able to enjoy more of the pic at a larger size!
