With every second constantly knocking on the door and pleading to open the door, Toby all knew their efforts weren't going anywhere anytime soon. Toby slumped his back against the door frame and slid down onto the cold wooden floor while the other two kept making noise. Defeat, he whispered under his breath, "What happened to the Caleb we knew?" Soon, Kyle and Lukas drew their hands away and looked at each other in lack of words for the situation. Lukas looked at the staircase and back to Kyle's eyes. The boy reluctantly agreed, walking to the end of the hallway with him. His took his first step down and looked back at Toby. "We'll be outside," he said gently, continuing the descent.

The silence echoed loudly in the halls. Toby fiddled with an envelope from Caleb's late mother. He held it up to the air, tilting it to visualize the blurred contents within. "You know, your mother wouldn't want to see you like this. 'Turn that frown upside down' she'd say," he chuckled. No response from the other side. Toby let out a heavy sigh before readjusting his back upright. He looked at the withered door knob, hoping Caleb would come to his senses and open the door.

"She often tells me how your green eyes spark full of life and how you always see the good in everything...We're all worried about you. I know life isn't looking too good, but she always says-"

"Please stop. Toby." Caleb said softly with an edge to his voice. "Just go."

I started this piece on April 8 at midnight and completed it on April 11 midday. I tested out semi-realism again but with a darker color palette 🤍
